There are various volatile compounds (Phytoncides) in some plants that have the capacity to kill certain microbes. Some of the terpene-based oils and some of the sulfuric compounds in plants from the Allium genus are these Phytoncides.
Essential oils have been used for aerial diffusion for environmental fragrancing or for aerial disinfection.
A French chemist discovered Aromatherapy in the 20th century by using volatile plant oils to heal himself when an accident caused him to mistakenly use them. His discovery was that it healed him more easily than previously.
The French chemist's name who (accidentally) discovered Aromatherapy was René Maurice Gattefossé.
Essential oils in the twentieth century are now distilled plant volatiles.
Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine using essential oils that are basically volatile liquid plant materials.
In the making of Essential Oils something is used called carrier oils, which are oily plant base triacylglycerides, to dilute essential oils for use on the skin to keep the Essential Oil from irritating the skin.

We use aromatherapy in our daily lives without even realizing it.
