Quercetin is one of the most well-known, non-citrus bioflavonoids.

Bioflavonoids are intended to provide antioxidant activity and nutritive support to help maintain normal capillary permeability.

The human body cannot manufacture bioflavonoids and therefore must receive its supply through supplementation or diet.

Quercetin belongs to a class of water-soluble plant pigments called bioflavonoids.

Bioflavonoids are an important class of nutrients that work with Vitamin C to help fight free radicals and are intended to provide nutritive support for healthy vein and capillary structures.

Quercetin is a flavonol (a subclass of flavonoids) and is a potent antioxidant, providing cardiovascular protection by reducing oxidation of LDL cholesterol.

Quercetin is one half of the rutin molecule, another flavonol, and is the more active antioxidant.

Quercetin possesses powerful antioxidant properties and like other bioflavonoids, has the ability to stabilize cell membranes.

These qualities contribute to Quercetin's ability to support healthy histamine levels and balanced immune function.

In addition, clinical studies have demonstrated that Quercetin may support prostate health.

Solgar’s Quercetin Complex includes the important flavonoid quercetin in a synergistic formula with Ester-C Plus™ and Brome-lain.

Ester-C Plus™ is exclusively formulated by Solgar and provides a patented method of supplementing pH neutral (non-acidic) vitamin C to prevent stomach irritation.

In addition, Ester-C Plus™ includes the vitamin C metabolites, L-threonic acid, L-lyxonic acid and L-xylonic acid, that occur along with vitamin C in nature.

A special manufacturing process is employed to form a unique calcium ascorbate metabolite complex.

Solgar’s Ester-C Plus™ offers the additional benefits of acerola, citrus bioflavonoids, rutin and rose hips in the Ester-C® ascorbate metabolite complex.

Quercetin belongs to a class of water-soluble plant pigments called flavonoids.

Quercetin acts as an antihistamine and has anti-inflammatory activity.

Since flavonoids help protect and potentiate vitamin C, quercetin is often taken with vitamin C.

The anti-inflammatory effect of bromelain is the reason this enzyme is effective for people suffering from sinusitis.

In addition, bromelain reduces the thickness of mucus, which may benefit patients with asthma or chronic bronchitis.

Vitamin C has an effect in preventing the common cold, it reduces the duration and severity of a cold.

Large amounts of vitamin C (e.g., 1–8 grams daily) taken at the onset of a cold episode shorten the duration of illness by an average of 23%.

QBC Plex by Solaray is a dietary supplement formulated with non-citrus Quercetin, Bromelain, Vitamin C Complex.

QBC Plex is a natural cold and allergy treatment with 3 synergistic ingredients that work together to treat allergy cold and sinus symptoms.

Twinlab Quercetin+ C is a bio-active bioflavonoid which has been demonstrated its ability to block mast cell and basophile histamine degranulation, inhibits xanthine oxidase (The enzyme which produces uric acid), and adolase reductase (the enzyme which converts glucose into sorbitol).

Quercetin's membranes stabilizing effect has been shown to significantly decrease neutrophil lysosomal enzyme secretion, thereby preventing lipid peroxidation, leukotrine release, and collagen breakdown by hydraluronidase.

Bioflavonoids...Flavonoids...Vitamin P

Read The Article in Wikipedia, Feb 3, 2009 *

The term flavonoid (or bioflavonoid) refers to a class of plant secondary metabolites.

According to the IUPAC nomenclature, they can be classified into:

  • flavonoids, derived from 2-phenylchromen-4-one (2-phenyl-1,4-benzopyrone) structure
  • isoflavonoids, derived from 3-phenylchromen-4-one (3-phenyl-1,4-benzopyrone) structure
  • neoflavonoids, derived from 4-phenylcoumarine (4-phenyl-1,2-benzopyrone) structure.

Flavonoids are most commonly known for their antioxidant activity.

However, it is now known that the health benefits they provide against cancer and heart disease are the result of other mechanisms.

Flavonoids are also commonly referred to as bioflavonoids in the media – the terms are largely equivalent and interchangeable, for most flavonoids are biological in origin.

Flavonoids have been referred to as "nature's biological response modifiers" because of strong experimental evidence of their inherent ability to modify the body's reaction to allergens, viruses, and carcinogens.

They show anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory , anti-microbial and anti-cancer activity.

According to Frei, "we can now follow the activity of flavonoids in the body, and one thing that is clear is that the body sees them as foreign compounds and is trying to get rid of them.

But this process of gearing up to get rid of unwanted compounds is inducing so-called Phase II enzymes that also help eliminate mutagens and carcinogens, and therefore may be of value in cancer prevention...

Flavonoids could also induce mechanisms that help kill cancer cells and inhibit tumor invasion."

Quercetin is a flavonoid and, to be more specific, a flavonol....found in citrus fruit, buckwheat and onions.

Quercetin can also inhibit reverse transcriptase, part of the replication process of retroviruses.

Epicatechin improves blood flow and thus seems good for cardiac health. Cocoa, the major ingredient of dark chocolate, contains relatively high amounts of epicatechin and has been found to have nearly twice the antioxidant content of red wine and up to three times that of green tea in in-vitro tests.

Oligomeric proanthocyanidins

Proanthocyanidins extracts demonstrate a wide range of pharmacological activity.

Their effects include increasing intracellular vitamin C levels, decreasing capillary permeability and fragility, scavenging oxidants and free radicals, and inhibiting destruction of collagen, the most abundant protein in the body.

The citrus bioflavonoids include hesperidin (a glycoside of the flavanone hesperetin),quercitrin, rutin (two glycosides of the flavonol quercetin), and the flavone tangeritin.

They also exhibit some of the anti-allergy and anti-inflammatory benefits of quercetin.

Bioflavonoids are called Vitamin P on occasion but are not really vitamins.  They are not made in the body so they have to be acquired in the diet.

SOURCES: peppers, buckwheat, black currants, the white material just beneath the peel of citrus fruits, apricots, blackberries, cherries, grapefruit, grapes, lemons, oranges, plums, prunes, cocoa.

Quercetin is a bioflavonoid and, more specifically, a flavonol...found in citrus fruit, buckwheat and onions.
