Essential Fatty Acids
Essential Fatty Acids or EFAs, are fatty acids that humans and other animals must ingest for good health because the body requires them but can't make them from other food components. The term refers to fatty acids required for biological processes, and not those that only act as fuel.

Essential Fatty Acids are fundamental and necessary nutrients just like vitamins and minerals.
1. They are especially needed for immune function,
2. cell growth
3. and healthy skin.
4. They are crucial for proper neuronal development as 50% of an infant/child's brain is built from and by EFAs.
5. All aspects of a child's physical, emotional and mental growth and function are dependent upon EFAs.
Essential Fatty Acids are called essential because they are required for so many important functions in the body and brain, and because the body cannot manufacture them.
These valuable nutrients are easily destroyed during the processing of foods, so supplementation is the only way to insure that children get sufficient EFAs. |
Essential Fatty Acids Leafy Veggies

Chia was cultivated by the ancient Aztecs, and was honored as a "power food."
Chia is one of the best plant sources of beneficial Omega-3 oils, especially a-linolenic acid (ALA).
Scientific Research on Omega-3 and other essential fatty acids (EFA) continues to prove that EFA's support cardiovascular health, comfortable joint mobility, immune system function and overall cellular energy.
Chia is often stored for long periods of time as a Survival Food, since it does not quickly turn rancid like other sources of Essential Fatty Acids.
Chia is high in vitamins and minerals such as magnesium, potassium and phosphorous. It contains many antioxidants, including significant levels of caffeic acids, quercetin and flavonols. Chia is an excellent source of high molecular weight soluble fiber, which supports healthy bowel function.
When Chia is mixed into a liquid, it forms a thick mass due to its high content of beneficial mucilages. This slows the digestion of carbohydrates in the digestive system, leading to a feeling of fullness, and reduces the spike in blood sugar that often accompanies the ingestion of carbohydrates. |

Derived from the seeds of the borage plant, Borage Oil is nature's richest source of the nutritionally important omega-6 fatty acid Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA).
Clinical research shows that Borage Oil helps maintain healthy moisturized skin and joint flexibility.
Since GLA is rarely found in foods and many factors block the body's ability to make it on its own, Borage Oil, with its unusually high GLA content, has been the subject of numerous clinical research studies worldwide. |

Essential Fatty Acids
Research suggests that high intakes of fish and omega-3 fatty acids are linked to decreased rates of major depression.
Omega-3 fatty acids, such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) are important for enzymatic pathways required to metabolize long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs).
Low plasma concentrations of DHA predict low concentrations of cerebrospinal fluid 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA).
It is found that low concentrations of 5-HIAA in the brain is associated with depression and suicide.
Studies show that Omega-3 EFAs support cardiovascular health and joint flexibility.

Essential Fatty Acids
There are only two EFAs: alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid, and linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid. Some researchers consider gamma-linolenic acid (omega-6), lauric acid (saturated fatty acid), and palmitoleic acid (monosaturated fatty acid) conditionally essential.
They were originally designated as Vitamin F when they were discovered as essential nutrients in 1923. In 1930, work by Burr, Burr and Miller on rats showed that they are better classified with the fats than with the vitamins.
Almost all the polyunsaturated fat in the human diet is from EFA. Some of the food sources of ω-3 and ω-6 fatty acids are fish and shellfish, flaxseed (linseed), hemp oil, soya oil, canola (rapeseed) oil, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, leafy vegetables, and walnuts.
Essential fatty acids play a part in many metabolic processes, and there is evidence to suggest that low levels of essential fatty acids, or the wrong balance of types among the essential fatty acids, may be a factor in a number of illnesses, including osteoporosis.
Almost all the polyunsaturated fats in the human diet are EFAs. Essential fatty acids play an important role in the life and death of cardiac cells. *
