Medicinal use of Ginkgo leaf tea is ancient in Chinese herbal medicine.

It helps clear the mind and improve the power of concentration.

Modern clinical trials have demonstrated the usefulness of ginkgo in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, age-related cognitive decline and depression.

Ginkgo's flavone glycosides and terpene lactones do indeed increase circulation to the brain and other parts of the body as well as exerting a protective action on nerve cells.

The unique terpene lactone components found in ginkgo are known as ginkgolides and bilobalide.

Ginkgolides apparently improve circulation and inhibit platelet-activating factor.

Bilobalide protects the cells of the nervous system.

Recent animal studies indicate that bilobalide may help regenerate damaged nerve cells.

One double blind study found that ginkgo could help people with macular degeneration, an oxidation-related disorder causing decreased or lost vision.

Ginkgo’s antioxidant activity in the brain and central nervous system may help prevent age-related declines in brain function.

The brain and central nervous system are particularly susceptible to free radical attack.

Free radical damage, that is, oxidation damage, in the brain is widely accepted as being a contributing factor in many disorders associated with aging, including Alzheimer’s disease.

The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends a dry extract from the dried leaf of Ginkgo biloba for

'(a) symptomatic treatment of disturbed performance in organic brain syndrome within the regimen of a therapeutic concept in cases of demential syndromes with the following principal symptoms: Memory deficits, disturbances in concentration, depressive emotional condition, dizziness, tinnitus, and headache.'

'(b) Improvement of pain-free walking distance in peripheral arterial occlusive disease in Stage II of Fontaine (intermittent claudication) in a regimen of physical therapeutic measures, in particular walking exercise.

(c) Vertigo and tinnitus (ringing in the ear) of vascular and involutional origin.'

'The following pharmacological effects have been established experimentally: Improvement of hypoxic tolerance, particularly in the cerebral tissue.

Inhibition of the development of traumatically or toxically induced cerebral edema, and acceleration of its regression.

Reduction of retinal edema and of cellular lesions in the retina.

Inhibition in age-related reduction of muscarinergic cholinoceptors and 2-adrenoceptors as well as stimulation of choline uptake in the hippocampus.

Increased memory performance and learning capacity.

Improvement in the compensation of disturbed equilibrium.

Improvement of blood flow, particularly in the region of microcirculation.

Improvement of the rheological properties of the blood.

Ginkgo/Gotu Kola with Choline may be put together to also help support memory and mental clarity.

Ginkgo Biloba contains two groups of active components Flavone glycosides unique bioflavonoids and terpene lactones.

The flavone glycosides help protect against oxidative damage to the brain tissues improve circulation to the brain and support memory function.

The terpene lactones assist in promoting healthy circulation and healthy nerve cells.

Traditionally, Ginkgo seeds were used. Now leaves are also being used for making extracts.

Sweet, bitter, astringent, neutral, mildly toxic and very toxic for children.

In the classical text of ''Ben Cao Pin Hui Jing Yao'' it states that the characteristics of the leaves of yin xing are bitter sweet, astringent, neutral, and belong to the lung meridian and can control the lungs and calm asthma, calm the mind and arrest pain, rid of water retention and stop diarrhea.

It is a general drug used as food and medicine.

Large dosage may cause poisoning with symptoms of vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, etc.

Western researchers have valued ginkgo leaves as effective preventive and treatment for premature senility, dementia, brain damage and a wide range of cognitive disorders.

Ginkgo roots are also used as medicine.

Uses of bai guo nuts: As a tonic. Lowers sludge level in blood. Expels phlegm and stops wheezing cough. Eliminates damp heat, dampness and stops vaginal discharge in yeast infection. For incontinence, spermatorrhea (involuntary discharge of semen without orgasm), and frequent urination.

Raw ginkgo nuts are toxic, but the toxin is mostly in the nut skin, which is peeled for preparation.

Over consuming can cause vomiting, pain in the abdomen, diarrhea, muscle spasm, anxiety and difficulty in breathy.

Used as a tea or decoction.

Ginkgo biloba, also known as the Maidenhair Tree, is an ancient Chinese tree held sacred for its health promoting properties.

It is one of the oldest plant species and is also known as the Fossil Tree. The use of its leaves for medicinal purposes was recorded as early as 2800 BC in ancient China.

The botanical name we use was assigned by the famous botanist Linnaeus in 1771.

It arose from the mixing of the Chinese names for the edible nut of the tree, Silver Almond and White Nut, by the Japanese, yielding yinguo (silver nut), which the Japanese pronounced roughly as ginkgo.

The leaves form two lobes, hence the species name biloba.

Ginkgo leaf tea was used to enhance a clear mind and improve the power of concentration.

The best-studied and most popular herb in Europe, ginkgo is prescribed more than 5 million times per year in Germany alone.

Numerous well-controlled studies have shown it can improve blood flow to the brain and alleviate vertigo and ringing in the ears.

And the evidence of its safety is solid.

In China, the curative powers of Ginkgo have been known for thousands of years.

It has been used as an aid in the treatment of many of the problems typically associated with aging, such as poor blood circulation, mental confusion and memory loss. Ginkgo stimulates cerebral circulation and oxygenation of cells, thereby improving mental clarity and alertness.

Ginkgo has further been found to be effective in reducing blood cell clumping which medical science has discovered can bring on congestive heart disease and strokes.

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo is believed to have nootropic properties, and is mainly used as memory and concentration enhancer, and anti-vertigo agent. However, studies differ about its efficacy.

In 2002 a long-anticipated paper appeared in JAMA titled "Ginkgo for memory enhancement: a randomized controlled trial." This Williams College study, sponsored by the National Institute on Aging rather than Schwabe, examined the effects of ginkgo consumption on healthy volunteers older than 60. The conclusion, now cited in the National Institutes of Health's ginkgo fact sheet, said: "When taken following the manufacturer's instructions, ginkgo provides no measurable benefit in memory or related cognitive function to adults with healthy cognitive function." ... The impact of this seemingly damning assessment, however, was ameliorated by the almost simultaneous publication of a Schwabe-sponsored study in the less prestigious journal Human Psychopharmacology. This rival study, conducted at Jerry Falwell's Liberty University, was rejected by JAMA, and came to a very different—if not exactly sweeping—conclusion: There was ample evidence to support "the potential efficacy of Ginkgo biloba EGb 761 in enhancing certain neuropsychological/memory processes of cognitively intact older adults, 60 years of age and over."

According to some studies, Ginkgo can significantly improve attention in healthy individuals. In one such study, the effect was almost immediate and reaches its peak in 2.5 hours after the intake.

In other symptoms

Out of the many conflicting research results, Ginkgo extract may have three effects on the human body: improvement in blood flow (including microcirculation in small capillaries) to most tissues and organs; protection against oxidative cell damage from free radicals; and blockage of many of the effects of platelet-activating factor (platelet aggregation, blood clotting) that have been related to the development of a number of cardiovascular, renal, respiratory and central nervous system disorders. Ginkgo can be used for intermittent claudication.

The World Health Organization reports that the medicinal uses of ginkgo biloba that are supported by clinical data include treatment of the effects mild to moderate cerebrovascular insufficiency as well as the effects of peripheral arterial occlusive diseases. Cerebrovascular insufficiency, i.e., insufficient blood flow to the brain, may manifest itself as such memory deficit, disturbed concentration or headaches. Peripheral arterial occlusive diseases are those in which the blood flow to the smaller arteries are restricted and may include claudication, i.e., painful walking, and Raynaud's disease, a condtion in which the extremities such as fingers, toes, nose or ears, feel numb and cold.

Preliminary studies suggest that Ginkgo may be of benefit in multiple sclerosis, showing modest improvements in cognition and fatigue without increasing rates of serious adverse events in this population.

A study conducted in 2003 by the Department of Dermatology, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India concluded that Ginkgo is an effective treatment for arresting the development of vitiligo.

Allergic precautions and contraindications to use

People taking pharmaceutical blood thinners such as warfarin or coumadin should consult with their doctor before taking Gingko biloba extracts, as it acts as an anti-coagulant.

Ginkgo biloba leaves also contain long-chain alkylphenols together with the extremely potent allergens, the urushiols (similar to poison ivy). Individuals with a history of strong allergic reactions to poison ivy, mangoes, and other urushiol-producing plants are more likely to experience an adverse reaction when consuming Ginkgo-containing pills, combinations, or extracts.

Ginkgoes are very large trees, normally reaching a height of 20–35 m (66–115 feet), with some specimens in China being over 50 m (164 feet). A combination of resistance to disease, insect-resistant wood and the ability to form aerial roots and sprouts makes ginkgos long-lived, with some specimens claimed to be more than 2,500 years old. *
