Glucosamine & Chondroitin
Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfates are the metabolic precursors of normal cartilage. Recent studies have demonstrated that glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate can act synergistically to lubricate joints, nourish cartilage and connective tissue, and assist in wound healing.

Glucosamine & Chondroitin are naturally occurring structural components that have recently enjoyed growing popularity.
Glucosamine is an amino sugar derived fromt he chitin of shellfish and is used by the body to support healthy joint structures.
Chondroitin complements Glucosamine and works synergistically to provide optimal nutritional support. |

Glucosamine sulfate is derived from the exoskeletons of shellfish.
It provides joints with the building blocks needed to address changes from normal wear and tear.
Chondroitin sulfate protects the cartilage and attracts fluids that give the tissue its shock-absorbing quality. |

Glucosamine & Chondroitin act to support prevention of connective tissue damage.
Chondroitin Sulfates are two classes of mucopolysaccharides that are found in joint cartilage and aid in the lubricating and rebuilding process.
Glucosamine is a natural amino sugar that is the starting point for the synthesis of mucopolysaccharides--the core of connective tissues such as collagen, bone matrix, and mucous membranes.
Glucosamine helps restore the thick lubricating fluids around joints to cushion their natural motion.
Glucosamine & Chondroitin can also help with skin health by replacing the body's natural glucosamine that is used up when the skin is under attack. |
Glucosamine & Chondroitin Osteoarthritis of Knee
Back To Top |
Glucosamine helps provide the building blocks for healthy cartilage and maintain structural integrity of joints and connective tissue.
Glucosamine is a building block for joint fluid, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, membranes and blood vessels. Supports healthy joint function.
Glucosamine sulfate is produced from shrimp shells, which have esentially the same biochemistry as human cartilage.
Glucosamine is not only safe but an active supporter of proteoglycan synthesis (i.e., a producer of cartilage macromolecules consisting of a protein bound to a glucosaminoglycan).
There is increasing evidence that Glucosamine does in fact relieve joint pain and inflammation for many arthritis sufferers, and that it may slow progression of the disease.
Because of its ability to reduce and--in some cases--completely eliminate the pain of osteoarthritis, some physicians and researchers feel Glucosamine might offer similar benefits for people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, spinal disc degeneration, tendinitis, bursitis, and physical injuries to the joints.
There is even speculation that it could play a preemptive role, eliminating the development of osteoarthritis.
Glucosamine stimulates the production of glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans, two essential building blocks of cartilage. This appears to 'jump start' the body’s own natural production of Glucosamine.
Combining Glucosamine with chondroitin Sulphate has been demonstrated to increase its effectiveness.
Glucosamine has been used to treat osteoarthritis in Europe since the 1980s. Several recent scientific studies have supported its effectiveness, and its popularity in the U.S. is spreading quickly.
In November 1999, a Belgian group of researchers presented a study to the American College of Rheumatology showing that glucosamine may slow the progression of osteoarthritis of the knee.
At a recent symposium of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the official 'green light' was given to glucosamine as a valid therapeutic alternative when NSAIDs such as aspirin and ibuprofen are ineffective or contraindicated.
Other clinicians at the symposium suggested that glucosamine could be recommended as first-line therapy in selected patients with osteoarthritis.
Glucosamine, in either the Sulphate, HCL, or acetylated forms, is so safe that it is a dietary supplement not even subject to FDA approval. |

Glucosamine & Chondroitin
Glocosamine & Chondroitin helps promote natural cartilage regeneration and healthy joints.
Along with glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate has become a widely used dietary supplement for treatment of osteoarthritis.
Glucosamine, an amino sugar, is an essential structural component of glycosaminoglycans, large linear molecules that help to lubricate joints, nourish cartilage and connective tissue, and assist in wound healing.
Chondroitin sulfate lends additional structural support via its high degree of interaction with collagen fibers.
Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfates are the metabolic precursors of normal cartilage.

Glucosamine & Chondroitin
Chondroitin Sulfate:
Chondroitin is in dietary supplements used as an alternative medicine to treat osteoarthritis and also approved and regulated as a symptomatic slow-acting drug for this disease (SYSADOA) in Europe and some other countries. It is commonly sold together with glucosamine. Chondroitin and glucosamine are also used in veterinary medicine.
Clinical studies have not identified any significant side effects or overdoses of chondroitin sulfate, which suggest its long-term safety. The Task Force of the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) committee recently granted chondroitin sulfate a level of toxicity of 6 in a 0-100 scale, confirming it is one of the safest drugs for osteoarthritis. Moreover, its safety is supported by an absence of drug-drug interactions (chondroitin sulfate is not metabolized by cytochrome P450), and the lack of safe alternatives for patients multi-medicated for osteoarthritis and other accompanying diseases, e.g. diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, etc. *

Glucosamine:
Glucosamine (C6H13NO5) is an amino sugar and a prominent precursor in the biochemical synthesis of glycosylated proteins and lipids. Glucosamine is part of the structure of the polysaccharides chitosan and chitin, which compose the exoskeletons of crustaceans and other arthropods, cell walls in fungi and many higher organisms. Glucosamine is one of the most abundant monosaccharides. It is produced commercially by the hydrolysis of crustacean exoskeletons or, less commonly by fermentation of a grain such as corn or wheat. In the US it is one of the most common non-vitamin, non-mineral, dietary supplements used by adults.
Glucosamine is naturally present in the shells of shellfish, animal bones and bone marrow. It is also present in some fungi, such as Aspergillus niger.
Since glucosamine is a precursor for glycosaminoglycans, and glycosaminoglycans are a major component of joint cartilage, supplemental glucosamine may help to prevent cartilage degeneration and treat arthritis.
Since glucosamine is usually derived from the shells of shellfish while the allergen is within the flesh of the animals, it is probably safe even for those with shellfish allergy. Alternative sources using fungal fermentation of corn are available. ***
