Inositol is the common name of myoinositol.

Inositol is readily absorbed and used to produce the active inositides as necessary.

The various forms of inositol (phosphatidylinositol and inositides such as IP3) are active in cell-to-cell communication, including the transmission of nerve impulses.

Tissues that are affected include the brain, liver and muscles.

Inositol is an indirect source of glucose and glucoronic acid, which are essential to liver detoxification.

Inositol

From The Article In Wikipedia... Jan 25, 2009

Clinical implications.....Psychiatric conditions

Patients suffering from clinical depression generally have decreased levels of inositol in their cerebrospinal fluid.

Some preliminary results of studies on inositol supplements show promising results for people suffering from problems such as bulimia, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and unipolar and bipolar depression.

________________________

Myo-inositol has been found in a single double-blind study to significantly reduce the symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) with effectiveness equal to SSRIs and virtually without side-effects.

In a double-blind, controlled trial, myo-inositol was superior to fluvoxamine for decreasing the number of panic attacks and had fewer side effects.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled study of depressed patients showed that a high dose of inositol (12 grams daily) resulted in significant improvement of symptoms, with no changes noted in liver, kidney, or hematological function.

Function

Inositol as the basis for a number of signaling and secondary messenger molecules, is involved in a number of biological processes, including:

  • Insulin signal transduction

  • Cytoskeleton assembly

  • Nerve guidance (Epsin)

  • Intracellular calcium (Ca2+) concentration control

  • Cell membrane potential maintenance

  • Serotonin activity modulation

  • Breakdown of fats and reducing blood cholesterol

  • Gene expression

Other conditions

D-chiro-inositol (DCI) has been found in two double-blind studies to be an effectivetreatment for many of the clinical hallmarks of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), including insulin resistance, hyperandrogenism, and oligo-amenorrhea.

Animal studies suggest inositol reduces the severity of the osmotic demyelination syndrome if given prior to rapid correction of chronic hyponatraemia.

Myo-Inositol was classified as a member of the vitamin B complex (often referred to asvitamin B8), but was found to be synthesized by the human body (thus, declassifying it as a vitamin).

Inositol

Inositol is a natural sugar that is found in your body.

It takes part in many aspects of the body's chemistry.

Protects against cardiovascular disease.

Protects against peripheral neuritis associated with diabetes.

Protects against hair loss.

Helps maintain healthy hair.

Functions as mild anti-anxiety agent.

Helps control blood-cholesterol level.

Treats constipation with its stimulating effect on muscular action of alimentary canal.

DEFICIENCIES can lead to: arteriosclerosis, constipation, hair loss, high blood cholesterol, irritability, mood swings, skin eruptions.[2]

SOURCES: brewer's yeast, lecithin, fruits, legumes, meats, milk, unrefined molasses, raisins, whole grains, vegetables.

Neither the inositol nor the phosphate(phytate) in phytic acid in plants is available to humans, since it cannot be broken down, except by bacteria.

Moreover, phytic acid also chelates(the verb chelated means firmly attached...not that chelated minerals are not good for you...it depends totally on WHAT they are firmly attached to) important minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc, making them unabsorbable, and contributing to mineral deficiencies in people whose diets rely highly on bran and seeds for their mineral intake.

Inositol or cyclohexane-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexol is a chemical compound with formula C6H12O6 or (-CHOH-)6.

The Vitamin B Complex

....and as you will find in any nutritional healing book as well as Prescription for Nutritional Healing by Phyllis A Balch, the B Vitamins are necessary for the maintenance of certain physiological functions and systems including, the nerves, eyes, hair, skin, mouth, liver, proper brain function and healthy gastrointestinal muscle tone.

The entire complex of B vitamins is necessary for energy production.  They are called coenzymes because they help the chemical reactions of enzymes with many other substances.

B-complex vitamins are necessary for the relief of anxiety and depression.

Elderly people need an adequate intake of the B vitamins as well as other vitamins because as we age we do not properly absorb nutrients.

There have been cases of elderly people diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease whose symptoms were relieved with the proper intake of Vitamin B-12 plus the B-Complex to relieve their depletion of these vitamins.

The B vitamins work properly as a team but one can take more of some than others.
A deficiency in one B vitamin often indicates a deficiency in another.

Although the B vitamins work in concert with each other, they will be discussed individually.

Inositol is vital for the proper maintenance of cholesterol levels, eczema, psoriasis, cardiovascular health.
