Vanuatu is an island nation located in the South Pacific. Ethnobotanist have identified it as the birthplace of kava.
There are more varieties grown here than anywhere else in the world.
Vanuatu law regulates that all kava sold for export must be at least 5 years old and be grown ORGANIC using no pesticides or chemicals.
One of the most popular and potent drinking variaties IS from the island of Espiritu Santo, know as Palarasul.
One pound of kava powder makes approx. 45 servings of kava beverage.
Making a kava beverage can be as easy as stirring a spoonful of kava powder into a galss of water. However, to get the most from your kava we recomend using your blender. Preparing kava this way helps to emulsify the active ingredients (kavalactones) so they will be absorbed easily and quickly in your stomach.
Easy Blender Recipe:
This method of preparation is our favorite. It is the very best way to get the most out of your kava. This is a suggested serving for two people. You may want more or less according to your taste. Leftovers will last several days in the refrigerator.
1) Place 3 Tbs. kava in the blender with 3 cups of water 2) Blend on high for one minute. 3)Strain if a smoother drink is desired. 4)Drink slowly. This also makes a great iced drink. You may want to add a tsp. of granular lecithin or 1 tsp vegetable oil. This helps to emulsify the kavalactones in the water. It also makes for a smoother tasting drink. A few slices of fresh ginger root added to the blender is also interesting. You will probably want to strain out the ginger pulp. Some people like to sweeten it with a bit of honey. Maple syrup is also a favorite. |

The ''Dunking Cloth'' Method This is the method is most often used in the South Pacific. This method is used when doing a trditional kava ceremony using a Tanoa (kava bowl). One cup of ground Kava root is placed in a cloth bag or wrapped in the center of a cloth. A dish towel can be used. Place cloth in a bowl with about a quart of water. Keeping the Kava root within the cloth, knead with fingers and fist for until water takes on the color of coffee with cream and a slightly foamy surface. This can take about 5-10 minutes. Pour off liquid for drinking. This amount will serve one to four people. The process can be repeated with the same bag of Kava. The second rinse being more dilute. |

Kava is the traditional sacramental brew of Polynesia, and has been shown to medically effective in elevating mood and reducing stress.
Several rhizome components and lactones have been isolated in the kava root.
Of the fifteen lactones isolated from kava, there are six major lactones (kavalactones) known to provide psychoactive activity: kawain, methysticin, demethoxy-yangonin, dihydrokawain, dihydomethysicin, and yongonin.
All kavalactones are physiologically active, though it is the fat-soluble kavalactones derived from kava resin that have the greatest effect on the central nervous system.
Kava also has a direct effect on muscle tension similar to tranquilizers.
The activity of the kava rhizome is related to several arylethylene pyrones similar in structure to myristicin, which is found in nutmeg.
Kava is mildly narcotic and produces mild euphoric changes characterized by elevated mood, fluent and lively speech and increased sense of sound.
Kava is the most relaxing botanical herb with exception of the opium poppy.
Pharmacological studies show kava kava's active ingredients, kavalactones, produce physical and mental relaxation and a feeling of well being.
It has also been used in the treatment of ailments of the genitourinary tract including vaginitis, gonorrhea and menstrual cramps.
Kava is a diuretic and an anti-inflammatory, thus useful for gout, rheumatism, bronchial congestion, cystitis and prostatis.
It is an effective local anesthetic and pain reliever when applied externally as a liniment.
The relaxed state and sharpening of senses also contribute to aphrodisiac effect.
Approximately 2 cups of powdered root. Makes 1.5 gallons of beverage.
Kava was brought to Hawaii centuries ago in the sailing canoes of the ancient Polynesian voyagers. Only the best varieties were selected to make the long journey over thousands of miles of open ocean.
To prepare one quart of Kava drink: 1) Place 1 oz of powdered Kava root in the blender. 2) Add one pint of cool milk, fruit juice, coconut milk, soy milk or water. 3) Blend at medium speed for five minutes, creating an emulsion. 4) Strain with a very fine strainer or cheesecloth. 5) Pour the remaining pint of cool liquid through the strained powder. 6) Press the strained powder to wring out the remaining liquid. 7) Add whatever flavorings you like - bananas, cocoa, honey, coconut, strawberries, ginger, cinnamon, vanilla - and blend one more time.
Kava really needs flavorings - really.
8) Enjoy! Kava is a first-rate sedative, muscle relaxant, analgesic and mood enhancer - but don't be surprised if your lips and tongue go numb! Kava is a powerful local anesthetic with potency similar to that of cocaine and procaine. 9) Since kavalactones are destroyed by heat.... |

HISTORY: Kava is a slow growing, perennial shrub.
A member of the pepper family (Piperaceae), it is native to the tropical Pacific Islands region.
Islanders who use it as a ritual beverage during ceremonies have long revered it.
It is traditionally used as a social beverage for chiefs and noblemen for its calming, relaxing effect.
The root is also used traditionally for stress related conditions.
Kava is cultivated commercially, where it is totally dependent on human intervention for propagation.
HIGHLY REGARDED FOR ANXIETY:
Kava is highly regarded in Europe as an effective treatment for anxiety. Numerous clinical studies have verified its efficacy. A randomized placebo-controlled trial evaluated Kava's effectiveness in 101 patients with anxiety of non-psychotic origin. Subjects were followed for 6 months. Symptoms were evaluated using the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAM-A). Significant improvements were seen at 8 weeks (reduction of HAM-A score from 30-17) and continued for another 16 weeks. At the end of the trial the HAM-A score was reduced to 9.
Similar, but quicker results were seen in a placebo-controlled double blind study of 40 women with menopause-related symptoms of anxiety. However, unlike the previous study there was a significant decrease (measured by HAM-A) in symptoms after just 1 week of treatment. Improvement continued throughout the full study period.
A recent meta-analysis reviewed several clinical trials to determine the efficacy of Kava for the treatment of anxiety. The reviewers concluded that Kava was superior to placebo as a symptomatic for anxiety. The authors agreed that Kava is an herbal option for the treatment of anxiety.
MECHANISM OF ACTION: The exact mechanism of Kava on the central nervous system is unknown. One possible mode of action is that Kava may interact with Gama-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors. Early in vivo and in vitro research found that Kavalactones demonstrated only weak GABA receptor binding actions. However, a more recent study found that Kava pyrones mediate effects in GABA-A receptors, particularly in the hippocampus and amygdala.
Other possible mechanisms include inhibition of noradrenaline uptake and activation of mesolimbic dopaminergic neurons. It is likely that there is more than one pathway responsible for Kava's activity on the central nervous system. |

Kava or Kava Kava
Kava or kava-kava (Piper methysticum) (Piper: Latin for 'pepper', methysticum: (Latinized) Greek for 'intoxicating') is a crop of the western Pacific.
The name kava(-kava) is from Tongan and Marquesan; other names for kava include, 'ava (Samoa), yaqona (Fiji), and sakau (Pohnpei).
The roots of the plant are used to produce a drink with sedative properties. Kava is consumed throughout the Pacific Ocean cultures of Polynesia (including Hawaii), Vanuatu, Melanesia and some parts of Micronesia.
Kava is sedating and is primarily consumed to relax without disrupting mental clarity. Its active ingredients are called kavalactones. A Cochrane Collaboration systematic review of its evidence concluded that it was likely to be more effective than placebo at treating short-term social anxiety. Safety concerns have been raised over liver toxicity largely due to the use of stems and leaves by supplement makers, as opposed to solely the root of the plant as dictated by traditional uses. However, based on a retrospective study of retained Piper methysticum drug materials in Germany, the alkaloid pipermethystine, occurring to about 0.2% in the leaves, is an unlikely cause for the observed hepatotoxicity, which led to the market withdrawal of Kava-Kava preparations in Europe. Whether kava hepatotoxicity may be due to contamination with aflatoxicosis or other mould hepatotoxins, requires further studies. Heavy use of kava appears to lead to malnutrition, weight loss, liver damage (causing elevated serum γ -glutamyltransferase and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels), renal dysfunction, rashes, pulmonary hypertension, macrocytosis of red cells, lymphocytopenia, and decreasing platelet volumes.

Herbal medicine
Kava is chewed by some to relieve symptoms of throat pain, as Kava produces a "numbing" effect on the tongue and throat.
Kava's active principal ingredients are the kavalactones, of which at least 15 have been identified and are all considered psychoactive. Only six of them produce noticeable effects, and their concentrations in kava plants vary. Different ratios can produce different effects.
Effects of kavalactones include mild sedation, a slight numbing of the gums and mouth, and vivid dreams. Kava has been reported to improve cognitive performance and promote a cheerful mood. Kava has similar effects to benzodiazepine medications, including muscle relaxant, anaesthetic, anticonvulsive and anxiolytic effects. They are thought to result from direct interactions of kavalactones with voltage-gated ion channels. Research currently suggests that kavalactones potentiate GABAA activity..... Heavy, long-term kava use does not cause any reduction of ability in saccade and cognitive tests but is associated with elevated liver enzymes.
Desmethoxyyangonin, one of the six major kavalactones, is a reversible MAO-B inhibitor (Ki 280 nM) and is able to increase dopamine levels in the nucleus accumbens. This finding might correspond to the slightly euphoric action of kava.
Kavain, in both enantiomeric forms, inhibits the reuptake of noradrenalin at the transporter (NAT), but not of serotonin (SERT). An elevated extracellular noradrenalin level in the brain may account for the reported enhancement of attention and focus.
Effects
Medical literature sometimes claim it has a "potential for addiction" because "it produces mild euphoria and relaxation". In a traditional setting, a moderately potent kava drink causes effects within 20–30 minutes that last for about two and a half hours, but can be felt for up to eight hours. Some report longer term effects up to two days after ingestion, including a feeling of mental clarity, patience, and an ease of acceptance. The effects of kava are most often compared to alcohol, or a large dose of diazepam.
Detection in biological fluids
Recent usage of kava has been documented in forensic investigations by quantitation of kavain in blood specimens. The principal urinary metabolite, conjugated 4'-OH-kavain, is generally detectable for up to 48 hours.
Basic research on anti-cancer potential
On 15 February 2006, the Fiji Times and Fiji Live reported that researchers at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland and the Laboratoire de Biologie Moleculaire du Cancer in Luxembourg had discovered that kava may treat ovarian cancer and leukemia. Kava compounds inhibited the activation of a nuclear factor that led to the growth of cancer cells. The Aberdeen University researchers published in the journal The South Pacific Journal of Natural Science that kava methanol extracts had been shown to kill leukemia and ovarian cancer cells in test tubes. The kava compounds were shown to target only cancerous cells; no healthy cells were harmed. This may help explain why kava consumption is correlated with decreased incidence of cancer.
Fiji Kava Council Chairman Ratu Josateki Nawalowalo welcomed the findings, saying that they would boost the kava industry. For his part, Agriculture Minister Ilaitia Tuisese called on the researchers to help persuade members of European Union to lift their ban on kava imports.
In November 2008, the EU announced its lifting of the kava trade ban, which had been imposed due to accusations made in 2001 and since debunked through scientific review of the facts.
Side effects and safety
Skin rashes
Chronic and heavy use of kava for a period of three months or more has occasionally been reported to cause a scaly, yellow skin rash and an eye irritation that disappears after discontinuation of the herb. The rash resembles one brought on by a niacin (vitamin B3) deficiency; however, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study showed no change in the rash after niacin supplementation. The 29 Tonga islanders who presented with the rash after heavy kava consumption—more than 900 g/week—were given either 100 mg of oral niacinamide or placebo. No statistically significant improvement was seen in the supplementing group, suggesting niacin deficiency may not cause the rash, which is more characteristic of an acquired ichthyosis.
Toxicity of traditional kava beverage preparations
In April 2003, University of Hawaii scientists reported to have discovered that traditionally discarded stem peelings and leaves of kava contain a toxic alkaloid—not present in the plant's roots. European pharmaceutical companies are known to have purchased such peelings when demand for kava extract soared in 2000-2001.
Two studies still allege changes in liver function, with the first describing the effects as temporary and reversible when discontinuing kava use. There is evidence of health concerns among heavy alcohol drinkers, including poor nutrition and a rise in liver enzymes typically associated with liver damage.
Allergy
Literature suggests that <0.5% of people that take kava have an allergic reaction to it. Allergic reactions are usually mild and include itchy skin or itchy throat, and hives on the skin usually prevalent on the user's belly region. If someone has an allergy to any relative of the pepper family, such as black pepper, they have a higher chance of having a kava allergy. *
