Laminaria digitata is recorded by Martin Martin (18th Century) as being used to induce appetite in a young man who would not eat.

The leaf-blade was boiled and the resulting water drunk with a little butter.

This species is used as a vegetable and can be eaten along with dulse or boiled and served with butter, pepper and vinegar.

In some areas it was a favourite of children who roasted the stipes and spread the resultant paste on bannocks.

Laminaria digitata is also a traditional animal feed and fertilizer.

It is common on all coasts of Britain and Ireland except for the east and south-east coast of England, otherwise distributed from Iceland and N Russia south to Brittany.

In the western Atlantic from the NE coast of Greenland south to Cape Cod and, although less common, to Long Island. English: Oarweed, Tangleweed, Sea Girdle, Sea Tangle, Kombu. Gaeilge: Coirleach, Leathach Fada, Leathrach, Feamannach Dubh, Leath, Learach.

In the late 1600s, a new use for seaweed was discovered which was to provide a major industry for the Western Isles and Orkney archipelago.

Extraction of soda and potash from Fucus spp., Ascophyllum spp. and Laminaria spp. provided a ready supply of these chemicals for the British isles.

Soda and potash were important chemicals in the soap and glass industry and were widely used for linen bleaching.

This allowed independence from the other main centre of production in Spain, where the chemicals (called barilla by the Spanish) were extracted from another coastal plant, the glasswort (Salicornia spp).

A group of scientists who worked in Russia’s State Rehabilitation Institute, where victims of the Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe underwent treatment, were aware of the healing qualities of seaweed, which had been known for centuries.

After trying out various forms of algae, one type yielded the best scientific data for this purpose.

It was the brown seaweed known as Laminaria japonica, which grows wild in the northern Pacific Ocean off the coast of uninhabited islands far to the east of Russia, known as the Kurils.

One of the main qualities of Laminaria is its high content of sodium alginates.

Alginates are the most effective organic elements that enable the human body to get rid of heavy metals and toxins. Not all "algae" have alginates; blue or green algae does not.

According to scientific testing, only this brown seaweed does!

The oldest Japanese recipes of preparing seaweed tell us to eat seaweed raw, rather than cooked.

Modern science affirms that an anti-cancer substance called Fucoidan, as well as beneficial polysaccharides, will break down if the seaweed is cooked.

This was determined when studies were performed on the Japanese island of Okinawa, known for its lowest cancer death rate in Japan.

Worldwide scientific studies and clinical research of these elements showed: *Organic Iodine feeds the Thyroid Gland, which controls metabolism and promotes maturation of the nervous system.

Iodine is important for thyroid disorders, wherever underactive or overactive.

Alginate is a natural absorbent of radioactive elements, heavy metals and free radicals.

It has the unique ability of binding heavy metals and radioactive elements to its own molecules.

As the Alginate cannot be broken down by the bile or saliva and cannot be absorbed by the body, it is secreted from the body together with the heavy metals and radioactive substances.

Fucoidan causes certain types of rapidly growing cancer cells to self-destruct.

Promoting apoptosis (self-destruction of cancer cells), Fucoidan helps to naturally eliminate harmful cells from organism.

Laminarin is a polysaccharide helpful in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

It exhibits 30% of the anticoagulant activity of heparin.

Known as Norwegian Kelp or Knotted Kelp, Ascophyllum nodosum grows only in deep ocean waters and isn’t exposed to the same toxins that off-shore kelp may be exposed to.

A traditional coastal food, it is a very rich source of natural vitamins and minerals, including essential trace minerals.

A great source of Magnesium, Calcium, Phosphorus, Iron, Potassium, 12 vitamins (including A, B1, B2, C, D and E ), 21 amino acids and over 60 minerals and trace elements.

It is particularly rich in the trace element iodine and tocopherol (Vitamin E).

Kelp contains 33-50% total fibres, higher than levels in most higher plants.

Large and sturdy brown seaweed is one of the most common of the 'kelps'.

Extensive 'forests' of this species, usually partly exposed at low tide, are found around the coast of Scotland.

These kelp forests provide a highly diverse habitat for many crustaceans, molluscs, fish, seals and other seaweeds.

Laminaria digitata is a traditional coastal food, a very rich source of natural vitamins and minerals, including essential trace minerals.

Oarweed contains 33-50% total fibres, higher than levels in most higher plants.

Nutritional analysis:

Protein: 8-14 %... Fat: 1 %... Carbohydrates: 48 %... Vitamin C: 12-18 ppm... Vitamin B1: 5 ppm... Vitamin B2: 22 ppm... Vitamin B3: 34 ppm... Vitamin B12: 0.6-0.12 ppm... Laminaran: 0-18 %... Mannitol: 4-16 %... Calcium: 12400-13200 ppm... Iodine: 2479 ppm... Iron: 50-70 ppm... Magnesium: 6400-7860 ppm... Manganese: 1-16 ppm... Sodium: 2-5.2 %...

Mineral-rich Oarweed is a popular salt substitute.

Because the plant's nutrients come in a natural form, they are easily assimilated by the body.

It can be used to enhance the flavor of soups, broths, and chowders.

Can be added to marinades and sauces or to everyday recipes for extra goodness.

A favorite addition to soothing cosmetic baths, it tones, hydrates and clears the skin.

Kelp

Kombu (Saccharina japonica and others), Kelps are large seaweeds (algae) belonging to the brown algae (Phaeophyceae) in the order Laminariales. There are about 30 different genera.

Kelps grow in underwater "forests" (kelp forests) in shallow oceans. The organisms require nutrient-rich water with temperatures between 6 to 14 degree celsius. They are known for their high growth rate — the genera Macrocystis and Nereocystis can grow as fast as half a meter a day, ultimately reaching 30 to 80 m.

Kombu can be used to soften beans during cooking, and to help convert indigestible sugars and thus reduce flatulence.

Because of its high concentration of iodine, brown kelp (Laminaria) has been used to treat goiter, an enlargement of the thyroid gland caused by a lack of iodine, since medieval times.

In 2010 a group of researchers in the University of Newcastle found that a fibrous material called alginate in sea kelp was better at preventing fat absorption than most over-the-counter slimming treatments in laboratory trials. As a food additive it may be used to reduce fat absorption and thus obesity. *

Kombu

Kombu or konbu, also called dashima or haidai, is edible kelp from the family Laminariaceae widely eaten in East Asia.

Most kombu is from the species Saccharina japonica (Laminaria japonica), extensively cultivated on ropes in the seas of Japan and Korea. Over 90 percent of Japanese kombu is cultivated, mostly in Hokkaidō, but also as far south as the Seto Inland Sea.

Kombu is a good source of glutamic acid, an amino acid responsible for umami, the Japanese word used for one of the five basic tastes in addition to salt, sweet, sour, and bitter, identified in 1908. Several foodstuffs in addition to kombu provide glutamic acid or glutamates. Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is often used as a food additive and flavor enhancer.

Kombu contains iodine, a mineral that is essential for normal growth and development. However, the high iodine content of kombu has been blamed for thyroid problems after drinking large amounts of soy milk in which kombu was an additive.

It is also a source of dietary fiber. **
