Milk Thistle (Silybum Marianum) contains silymarin which counteracts the toxic effects of a wide variety of poisons.

Silymarin is a potent liver protectant used for hepatitis, viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, jaundice, psoriasis, free radical protection, fatty degeneration of the liver, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, degenerative disorders of blood vessels, mushroom poisoning and other liver diseases.

Milk Thistle Silybum Marianum is a spiny leaved plant containing reddish-purple flowers.

Silymarin plays a role in displacing toxins binding to the liver and causing the cells of the liver to regenerate at a faster rate.

No alternative medicine has been found that shows similar functions in the body.

Milk thistle is very popular among those taking certain medications known to cause liver damage.

Milk Thistle is known for its antioxidant and liver-clensing capibilities.

Silymarin, the active ingredient, has been shown to restore the powerful antioxidant Glutathione inside the liver which aids in detoxification.

Milk Thistle contains silymarin, a substance contained in the seeds that exerts a highly protective effect on the liver, maintaining its function and preventing damage from compounds that are normally highly toxic.

It is the main remedy used in Western herbal medicine to protect the liver and renew liver cells.

Milk thistle is used in the treatment of hepatitis and jaundice, as well as in conditions where the liver is under stress from infection, excess alcohol, or chemotherapy.

This herb regulates the digestion of fats, helps stabilize blood sugars and reduces intestinal inflammation.

Traditionally it has been used for treating liver diseases, acne, Crohn's disease, IBS, alcoholism, atherosclerosis, gallstones, high cholesterol, cancer, diabetes, ovarian cysts, seizures, Parkinson's and psoriasis.

Documented as early as the ancient Greeks, milk thistle has been long used and extensively researched as an aid to liver function.

Silymarin, a strong antioxidant, is one of the liver-protecting compounds found in milk thistle.

Milk thistle is also useful to help support healthy digestion and elimination.

Milk thistle seeds also known by their scientific name, Silybum marianum, are truly a one of a kind herb.

Milk Thistle Seed is world renowned for centuries because of a natural compound called silymarin found in it.

Silymarin nourishes and replenishes the liver better than any other nutrient currently available.

Since your liver acts as the body's filter, it constantly is cleansing it to keep you healthy from toxins.

These toxins accumulate over time in the liver, and whole Milk Thistle Seeds are believed to hold potent antioxidant properties and rejuvenating actions that work to keep the liver strong and healthy.

Used as a decoction, extract and tincture.

The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Milk Thistle ripe seed: 'The drug contains silibinin, silydianin, and silychristin.

Uses: Crude drug: Dyspeptic complaints.

Formulations [an extract standardized to at least 70 percent silymarin, the collective name for the three compounds listed]: Toxic liver damage; for supportive treatment in chronic inflammatory liver disease and hepatic cirrhosis.'

'Average daily dose of drug: 12 - 15 g; Formulations equivalent to 200 - 400 mg of silymarin, calculated as silibinin.

Mode of Administration: Powdered drug for making infusions and other galenical formulations to be taken by mouth.'

Milk thistle is believed to protect the cells of the liver by blocking the entrance of harmful toxins and helping to remove these toxins from the liver cells.

Milk thistle seeds contain a bioflavonoid complex known as silymarin.

As with other bioflavonoids, silymarin is a powerful antioxidant.

Milk thistle also regenerates injured liver cells.

Milk thistle extract is most commonly recommended to counteract the harmful actions of alcohol on the liver. Long-term placebo-controlled, double blind studies have shown milk thistle extracts to be effective in patients with liver cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis, and even diabetes due to cirrhosis.

Milk thistle alters bile makeup, thereby potentially reducing risk of gallstones.

Since silymarin is not very soluble in water, a strong boiled decoction of the ground seeds is most effective, rather than a weak infusion (tea).

More effective yet is the standardized extract.

A recent case report of chronic infection by hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus demonstrated potential efficacy of treatment with milk thistle (10 g ground-up seeds in oatmeal with standardized (70%) milk thistle extract capsules three times daily) in combination with another herb known for its hepatoprotectant activity, Phyllanthus amarus (200 mg, three times daily).

'Actions: Silymarin acts as an antagonist in many experimental liver-damage models: phalloidin and -amanitin (death-cap toxins), lanthanides, carbon tetrachloride, galactosamine, thioacetamide, and the hepatotoxic virus FV3 of cold-blooded vertebrates.

The therapeutic activity of silymarin is based on two sites or mechanisms of action: (a) it alters the structure of the outer cell membrane of the hepatocytes in such a way as to prevent penetration of the liver toxin into the interior of the cell; (b) it stimulates the action of nucleolar polymerase A, resulting in an increase in ribosomal protein synthesis, and thus stimulates the regenerative ability of the liver and the formation of new hepatocytes.'

The liver functions as the filter to remove toxins from the body.

These toxins were caused by environmental chemicals or foods and beverages we consume.

Milk thistle removes toxins from the liver and improves liver function.

Green tea exerts a mild diuretic effect to help in toxin removal.

Regular consumption of green tea protects the liver.

A group of naturally occurring compounds in green tea known as catechins, have an anti-oxidant effect.

Green tea has a protective effect against toxins such as heavy metals, synthetic chemicals and harmful micro-organisms.

To brew a perfect cup of green tea, place one tea bag into your favorite cup. White is ideal so you may better appreciate the rich golden hue. Pour one cup of fresh boiling water over the bag. Steep 4 to 6 minutes and remove the bag.Breath deeply and enjoy the delicate stimulating aroma.

Milk Thistle

The milk thistle is a thistle of the genus Silybum Adans., a flowering plant of the daisy family (Asteraceae). They are native to the Mediterranean regions of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. The name "milk thistle" derives from two features of the leaves: they are mottled with splashes of white and they contain a milky sap.

The seeds of the milk thistle have been used for 2000 years to treat chronic liver disease and protect the liver against toxins.

Health benefits

Milk thistle has been reported to have protective effects on the liver and to greatly improve its function. It is typically used to treat liver cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis (liver inflammation), toxin-induced liver damage (including the prevention of severe liver damage from Amanita phalloides ('death cap' mushroom poisoning), and gallbladder disorders.

Toxin-induced liver damage

Research suggests that milk thistle extracts both prevent and repair damage to the liver from toxic chemicals and medications. Workers who had been exposed to vapors from toxic chemicals (toluene and/or xylene) for 5–20 years were given either a standardized milk thistle extract (80% silymarin) or placebo for 30 days. The workers taking the milk thistle extract showed significant improvement in liver function tests (ALTand AST) and platelet counts vs. the placebo group.

The efficacy of silymarin in preventing drug-induced liver damage in patients taking psychotropic drugs long-term has been investigated. This class of drugs is known to cause liver damage from oxidation of lipids. Patients taking silymarin in the study had less hepatic damage from the oxidation of lipids than patients taking the placebo.

Amanita mushroom poisoning

The efficacy of thirty different treatments was analyzed in a retrospective study of 205 cases of Amanita phalloides (death cap) mushroom poisoning. Both penicillin and hyperbaric oxygen independently contributed to a higher rate of survival. When silybin [silibinin] was added to the penicillin treatment, survival was increased even more. In another 18 cases of death cap poisoning, a correlation was found between the time elapsed before initiation of silybin therapy, and the severity of the poisoning. The data indicates that severe liver damage in Amanita phalloides poisoning can be prevented effectively when administration of silybin begins within 48 hours of mushroom intake. In a recent 2007 event, a family of six was treated with milk thistle and a combination of other treatments to save them from ingested poisonous mushrooms. While five of the six made a full recovery, the grandmother showed liver recovery but was overcome by kidney failure related to the poisonous mushrooms.

Other uses

Beside benefits for liver disease, other unproven treatment claims include:

  • Used as a post (oral steroid) cycle therapy for body builders and/or in the hopes of reducing or eliminating liver damage.
  • Lowering cholesterol levels.
  • Reducing insulin resistance in people with type 2 diabetes who also have cirrhosis.
  • Reducing the growth of cancer cells in breast, cervical, and prostate cancers.
  • Used in many products claiming to reduce the effects of a hangover.
  • Used by individuals withdrawing from opiates, especially during the Acute Withdrawal Stage.
  • Reducing liver damaging effects of chemotherapeutic drugs.
  • Clinical study has shown that liver function tests can be improved in active hepatitis patients. *

Milk Thistle

Milk thistle leaf is not rich in silymarin, and is not a substitute for Milk Thistle seed.

The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Milk Thistle ripe seed: ‘The drug contains silibinin, silydianin, and silychristin.

Scientifically speaking: ‘Actions: Silymarin acts as an antagonist in many experimental liver-damage models: phalloidin and -amanitin (death-cap toxins), lanthanides, carbon tetrachloride, galactosamine, thioacetamide, and the hepatotoxic virus FV3 of cold-blooded vertebrates. The therapeutic activity of silymarin is based on two sites or mechanisms of action: (a) it alters the structure of the outer cell membrane of the hepatocytes in such a way as to prevent penetration of the liver toxin into the interior of the cell; (b) it stimulates the action of nucleolar polymerase A, resulting in an increase in ribosomal protein synthesis, and thus stimulates the regenerative ability of the liver and the formation of new hepatocytes.’

Milk Thistle is particularly helpful to the body in combating the harmful effects of pollution.

Milk thistle is used in the treatment of hepatitis and jaundice as well as in conditions where the liver is under stress from infection excess alcohol or chemotherapy.

This herb regulates the digestion of fats helps stabilize blood sugars and reduces intestinal inflammation.

Traditionally it has been used for treating liver diseases, acne, Crohns disease, IBS, alcoholism, atherosclerosis, gallstones, high cholesterol, cancer, diabetes, ovarian cysts, seizures, Parkinsons, and psoriasis.

Milk Thistle is the pre-eminent remedy to protect the liver from degeneration.

Sincerely, Mother
