Red clover

Red clover has been administered to help restore irregular menses and to balance the acid-alkaline level of the vagina to promote conception...and has been used for a variety of medicinal purposes, such as the treatment of bronchitis, burns, cancers, ulcers,  sedation, asthma, and syphilis, and it is an ingredient in eight-herb essiac tea.

Red Clover Extract contains specific isoflavones, including genistein, daidzein, biochanin, and formononetin.

Isoflavones are phytoestrogens, plant compounds with a weak estrogenic effect, which can help balance the body's estrogen levels.

When estrogen levels are high, they may work by competing for and binding to the body's estrogen receptors, causing excess circulating estrogen to be sent to the liver for elimination.

When the body is low in estrogen, the situation during menopause, phytoestrogens may substitute for the lack of human estrogen, mitigating the effects of its absence.

Research shows that red clover may help in maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system during menopause.

Red Clover is a rich source of isoflavones, including genistein, diadzein, biochanin and formononetin.

It is important to consume all four, which may not be present in your diet.•

When the body is low in estrogen, as in menopause, phytoestrogens such as isoflavones may substitute for the lack of estrogen, mitigating the effects of its absence.•

Research shows that red clover may help maintain a healthy cardiovascular system during menopause.

For centuries cleansing has been a cornerstone of natural health care-and the chemical toxins and environmental pollutants in today's environment make this practice more important than ever.

Among people of the Appalachians, it was customary to drink herbal “beers” made from roots and barks, such as yellow dock and sarsaparilla, when springtime arrived.

This seasonal cleansing was done to help clear the body of toxins thought to accumulate over the long winter.

Herbal cleansing is still a vital aspect of a natural health care program.

Red Clover: Pure Blood Means Vibrant Health!

Red clover is a primary botanical purifier used by Western herbalists.

Native Americans used its blossoms for blood cleansing and gynecological problems.

Red clover flowers were used in traditional American herbalism in the form of teas and decoctions, soothing gargles and skin salves.

They were valued for supporting healthy skin, promoting digestion and stimulating the liver.

Echinacea is renowned for immune support.

Yellow dock is traditionally used by modern herbalists as a cleanser and to support elimination.

Sarsaparilla is a traditional springtime purifier from the Appalachians.

American ginseng is an adaptogenic tonic, which helps our bodies deal with physiological and emotional stress.•

Chinese Botanicals: Honeysuckle flower can be found in many classic Chinese formulas, often in combination with the blood cleanser, forsythia fruit.

Ginger root is used in traditional Chinese herbalism for digestive support, and to promote sweating, which supports elimination of toxins.

Uncooked sprouts are among the most nutritious and strengthening of foods.

Red clover sprouts add a delicious crunch to fresh salads.

You can also grow your own garden-fresh red clover blossoms.

Red clover blossoms are used as an infusion, decoction, extract, tincture and salve.

Delicious Red Clover Tea: Red Clover Blossoms Lemon Honey Fresh mint leaves -and/or- Several dandelion leaves Put the fresh or dried blossoms and leaves, with or without the mint and dandelion, into a 2-cup earthenware teapot. Fill teapot with boiling water, cover, and infuse for 5 to 10 minutes over very low heat. Strain into a hot cup, add a twist of lemon and sweeten with honey.

Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'The fluid extract of Trifolium is used as an alterative and antispasmodic.

An infusion made by 1 oz. to 1 pint of boiling water may with advantage be used in cases of bronchial and whooping-cough.

Fomentations and poultices of the herb have been used as local applications to cancerous growths.'

'Dosages: 1 drachm of fluid extract, 1 to 2 drachms of infusion.'

King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Red clover is an excellent alterative, and one of the few remedies which favorably influences pertussis.

In earlier editions of this work it was stated that 'a strong infusion of the plant is said to afford prompt relief in whooping-cough, suspending the spasmodic cough entirely in 2 or 3 days; it is to be given in ½ fluid ounce, every 1 or 2 hours, throughout the day.'

Since then the remedy has come into extensive use, but the statement should be modified, as it does not reach all classes of cases.

When the proper case is found it acts promptly, but as yet the specific indications in this complaint have not been discovered.'

'It is also a remedy in other spasmodic coughs, as those of measles, bronchitis, laryngitis, phthisis, etc.'

'It is also highly recommended in ill-conditioned ulcers of every kind, and deep, ragged-edged, and otherwise badly-conditioned burns.

It possesses a peculiar soothing property, proves an efficient detergent, and promotes a healthful granulation.'

'The infusion may be used freely; a strong tincture may be prepared from the recently dried flowers (viii) in 50 per cent alcohol (Oj) The dose of this will range from 1 to 60 drops; specific trifolium, 1 to 60 drops.'

American Materia Medica, 1919 (Ellingwood): 'The agent is also prescribed in irritable conditions of the larynx and air passages, especially if evidenced by spasmodic cough.

It has served a good purpose in whooping cough, in the cough of measles, and in general bronchial or pulmonary irritation.

A dry, irritable cough will respond most readily to its influence.'

Fluid extracts are a highly effective way to administer herbs.

They are very concentrated, they work faster than teas and are four to eight times stronger than capsules.

Extracts are easily digestible and quickly assimilated into the system.

Red Clover is most commonly used to help balance hormones during menopause.

Its estrogen promoting qualities help prevent hot flashes, irritability and mood swings.

Interest in red clover focuses primarily on the estrogenic effects of its isoflavone compounds.

Although isolated isoflavone products are very different from the whole herb, they have shown promise in the treatment of a number of conditions associated with menopause, such as hot flashes, cardiovascular health, and the bone loss associated with osteoporosis.

Menopause increases a woman's risk for developing cardiovascular disease.

Supplementation with red clover isoflavones has been associated with a sizeable increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, or ''good'' cholesterol in pre- and postmenopausal women, leading some researchers to believe that these isoflavones may help protect against cardiovascular disease.

Other studies, however, have refuted this finding.

Red Clover Tea In Shakespearean times, Red Clover(Trifolium pratense) was known as "Honey Stalks" because it was so liked by bees.

Red Clover is one of the world's oldest agricultural crops, cultivated since prehistoric times, and has a long history as a religious and magical symbol.

Early Christians linked the plant to the Trinity, and during the Middle Ages, it was considered a charm against evil.

The four-leaf clover, an occasional variety resulting from mutation, was and still is considered a sign for luck.

Red Clover was also the model for the "clubs" suit in playing cards.

Among the largest of the various clover species, Red Clover has a celebrated reputation for its health properties.

Red Clover has a delicate flavor that can be brewed and served hot or cold and sweetened with honey.

Many enjoy Red Clover tea mixed with Chamomile tea.

Red Clover

Trifolium pratense (Red Clover) is a species of clover, native to Europe, Western Asia and northwest Africa, but planted and naturalised in many other regions.

It is an herbaceous, short lived perennial plant, variable in size, growing to 20–80 cm tall. The leaves are alternate, trifoliate (with three leaflets), each leaflet 15–30 mm long and 8–15 mm broad, green with a characteristic pale crescent in the outer half of the leaf; the petiole is 1–4 cm long, with two basal stipules. The flowers are dark pink with a paler base, 12–15 mm long, produced in a dense inflorescence.

Uses

Red clover contains isoflavones (estrogen-like compounds) which can mimic the effect of endogenous estrogen. The use of red clover to relieve menopausal symptoms has been shown to be sometimes ineffective, but safe. The isoflavones (like irilone and pratensein) from red clover have been used to treat the symptoms of menopause. A large, well-controlled study of high-isoflavone red clover extract supplements showed a modest reduction of hot flashes with Promensil, but not Rimostil, compared to placebo.

Traditionally, red clover has been administered to help restore irregular menses and to balance the acid-alkaline level of the vagina to promote conception.

It has also been reported that red clover has been used for a variety of medicinal purposes, such as the treatment of bronchitis, burns, cancers, ulcers, sedation, asthma, and syphilis.

It is an ingredient in eight-herb essiac tea.

Warnings and contraindications

Due to its activity on estrogen receptors, it is contraindicated in people with a history of breast cancer, endometriosis, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, uterine fibroids, or other estrogen-sensitive conditions.....but others have suggested that the high isoflavone content counteracts this and even provides benefits in these conditions.

Due to its coumarin derivatives, it should be used in caution in individuals with coagulation disorders or currently undergoing anticoagulation therapy.

It is metabolized by CYP3A4 and therefore caution should be used when taking it with other drugs using this metabolism pathway. *

Red Clover

Red Clover (trifolium pratense) has been used traditionally to purify the blood, relieve inflammation, and coughing as it expels toxins from the bloodstream, liver and kidneys, relieves irritation and inflammation of the urinary tract, stimulates digestive fluids, relieves constipation, soothes inflammation of the bowel, stomach and intestines, calms coughs, expels mucus, relieves sore throat, relaxes muscle cramps and nervous exhaustion and may be beneficial for cancer, skin irritations and inflammations.

Interestingly, one recent study found that menopausal women taking red clover supplements experienced a significant improvement in arterial compliance (a measure of the strength and resilience of the arterial walls).

Arterial compliance diminishes during menopause and may increase a woman's risk for heart disease.

While not all studies are thoroughly convincing, several studies of a proprietary extract of red clover isoflavones suggest that it may significantly reduce hot flashes in menopausal women.

Menopause increases a woman's risk for developing osteoporosis (significant bone loss).

Some studies suggest that a proprietary extract of red clover isoflavones may slow bone loss and even boost bone mineral density in pre- and perimenopausal women.

Mother cannot stress how importantly good, Red Clover is for your health and a cup of tea on occasion can only be helpful.

Red Clover Tea is always good for sipping while reading this information. ;-)
