Reiki teachings claim that there is an inexhaustible, universal "life force" spiritual energy,that can be used to induce a healing effect.

Believers say that anyone can gain access to this energy by means of an attunement process carried out by a Reiki Master. Claims for such energy have no known theoretical or biophysical basis.

Reiki is described by adherents as a holistic therapy which brings about healing on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels.

The belief is that the energy will flow through the practitioner's hands whenever the hands are placed on, or held near a potential recipient, who can be clothed.

Some teachings stress the importance of the practitioner's intention or presence in this process, while others claim that the energy is drawn by the recipient's injury to activate or enhance the natural healing processes.

Going further, the belief is that the energy is "intelligent", making diagnosis unnecessary.

A second level of training, including another initiation, is said to equip the practitioner to perform Reiki treatments from a distance.

This method, it is stated, involves the use of special symbols to form a temporary connection between the practitioner and the recipient, regardless of location, and then to send the Reiki energy.

The Reiki Master that Mother began seeing during her illness used the Usui method through the use of gestures in the air to heal her. Susan's hands never touched Mother's body. She would go to see her after her medical treatments.

Mother would lie on the table she prepared for her in the room she used for her practice that her husband had added on at their house. She would then play some very soothing, relaxing music that had no beat to quiet Mother from the distress of the medical treatment, talk to her quietly during her treatment, and somewhere around an hour later she was done and Mother felt like she could go on. Mother even took a friend of hers with her one time who is an ethnobotanist, and she enjoyed just being there.

The Reiki Master Mother went to is a licensed, practicing Registered Nurse as well. Mother would never have made it through the radical medical treatments they performed on her if she had not gone to her for Reiki Therapy post-treatment.

She could never have even gone to her first radiation treatment if she had not found her to speak with first, and Susan told Mother that, as radical and invasive as her medical treatments were going to be, they were also going to save her life, and to just think of her head being held in God's hands during the medical treatments (instead of being bolted to the table as it had to be).

Mother then knew she could go through with them. And here she is today.

If you are thinking about having Reiki treatments, or becoming a Reiki Master, do what you believe is best. One must always do what they believe, as Mikao Usui did.

Mother would never have made it through her illness without seeing her Reiki Master.

Reiki

Reiki is a spiritual practice developed in 1922 by Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui that uses a technique commonly called palm healing as a form of complementary and alternative medicine and is sometimes classified as oriental medicine by some professional bodies. Through the use of this technique, practitioners believe that they are transferring healing energy in the form of ki through the palms.

There are two main branches of Reiki, commonly referred to as Traditional Japanese Reiki and Western Reiki. Within both Traditional and Westernised forms of Reiki, there are three forms of degrees, commonly referred to as the First, Second, and Master/Teacher degree. According to Reiki practitioners and Masters, at First Degree, a Reiki practitioner is able to heal themselves and others, at Second Degree is able to heal others distantly (commonly called distant healing) with the use of specialised symbols, and at Master/Teacher level is able to teach and attune others to Reiki.

While in the process of developing his Reiki system, Usui summarised some of the emperor's works into a set of ethical principles, which later became known as the Five Reiki Precepts ("The Five Commandments," from the Buddhist teachings of being prohibited against killing, thievery, sexual misconduct, lying, and for intemperance).
