selenium in brazil nuts from the braziil nut tree

Selenium

Selenium is an antioxidant that inhibits the oxidation of lipids (fats); protects the immune system; regulates the effects of thyroid hormone on fat metabolism; prevents the formation of certain tumor; aids the production of antibodies; helps maintain a healthy heart and liver; is needed for pancreatic function & tissue elasticity.

Yeast free selenomethionine is an advanced chelate form of selenium for superior absorption.

Selenium is an essential component of glutathione, the body's most potent natural antioxidant system.

It is a popular choice in many antioxidant regimens.

Selenium is also essential for healthy immune functioning.

Selenium supplementation has reduced the incidence of viral hepatitis in selenium-deficient populations, presumably by enhancing immune function.

On a basic cellular level, every cell in the body needs a particular hormone from the thyroid gland that selenium helps to convert to an active form.

Selenium in selenium in whole grains Whole Grains ~84mcg/1 cup

Perhaps the most famed use of selenium in supplement form is as an antioxidant; it helps to mop up dangerous molecules known as free radicals that can damage and alter healthy cells.

Selenium is an essential trace mineral and functions as part of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione perioxidase.

It is bonded to the essential sulfur amino acid, methionine, in a naturally occuring form as found in the diet.

Selenium is found most abundantly in Brazil Nuts, organ meats, seafood, and wheat germ.

Selenium in selenium in sweetened condensed milk Sweetened Condensed Milk ~45mcg/1 cup

Yeast-free Selenium is high potency selenium derived from l-selenomethionine.

Selenium activates an antioxidant enzyme called glutathione peroxidase, which helps protect the body from cancer.

Selenium has also induced “apoptosis” (programmed cell death) in cancer cells.

A recent study following over 1,300 people found that those given 200 mcg of yeast-based selenium per day for seven years had a 50% drop in the cancer death rate.

Another recent trial found that men exposed to the most dietary selenium developed 65% less advanced prostate cancer.

Selenium is also essential for healthy immune functioning.

As a result, selenium supplementation has reduced the incidence of hepatitis.

Selenium supplementation stimulates the activity of white blood cells—primary components of the immune system.

Selenium is also needed to activate thyroid hormones.

Selenium

Selenium is an antioxidant and it: inhibits the oxidation of lipids (fats); protects the immune system; regulates the effects of thyroid hormone on fat metabolism; prevents the formation of certain tumors; aids in the production of antibodies; helps to maintain a healthy heart and liver; is needed for pancreatic function and tissue elasticity.  Selenium is incorporated into 25 proteins, called selenoproteins.  These proteins play necessary roles in activating thyroid hormones and regenerating Vitamin C. [1]

Deficiencies: Have been linked to: cancer, heart disease, exhaustion, growth impairment, high cholesterol, infections, liver impairment, insufficiency, sterility. [2]

Do not take more than 400 micrograms of selenium daily. [3]

If you take supplemental selenium, do not consume Brazil nuts.  One ounce of Brazil nuts contains 544 micrograms of selenium.[4]

SOURCES: meat, grains, Brazil nuts are the only truly concentrated (natural source), brewer's yeast, broccoli, brown rice, chicken, dairy products, dulse, garlic, kelp, liver, molasses, onions, salmon, seafood, torula yeast, tuna, vegetables, wheat germ, whole grains. [5]

Mother takes selenium everyday or eats the proper amount of selenium containing foods to keep herself in good health.

Please remember to eat your daily supply of foods containing selenium.

Sincerely, Mother

Selenium

From The Article In Wikipedia... Jan 13, 2009

Health effects

Although it is toxic in large doses, selenium is an essential micronutrient for animals.

In plants, it occurs as a bystander mineral, sometimes in toxic proportions in forage (some plants may accumulate selenium as a defense against being eaten by animals, but other plants such as locoweed require selenium, and their growth indicates the presence of selenium in soil).

In humans, selenium is a trace element nutrient which functions as cofactor for reduction of antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidases and certain forms of thioredoxin reductase found in animals and some plants (this enzyme occurs in all living organisms, but not all forms of it in plants require selenium).

Selenium also plays a role in the functioning of the thyroid gland by participating as a cofactor for the three known thyroid hormone deiodinases.

Dietary selenium comes from nuts, cereals, meat, fish, and eggs. Brazil nuts are the richest ordinary dietary source (though this is soil-dependent, since the Brazil nut does not require high levels of the element for its own needs). High levels are found in kidney, tuna, crab and lobster, in that order.

Selenium Indicator Plants

Certain species of plants are considered indicators of high selenium content in the soil, since they require high levels of selenium in order to thrive. The main selenium indicator plants are locoweed (Astragalus species), prince's plume (Stanleya sp.), woody asters (Xylorhiza sp.), and false goldenweed (Oonopsis sp.)

Toxicity

Although selenium is an essential trace element, it is toxic if taken in excess. Exceeding the Tolerable Upper Intake Level of 400 micrograms per day can lead to selenosis.

Symptoms of selenosis include a garlic odor on the breath, gastrointestinal disorders, hair loss, sloughing of nails, fatigue, irritability and neurological damage.

Extreme cases of selenosis can result in cirrhosis of the liver, pulmonary edema and death.

Deficiency...selenium deficiency

Selenium deficiency is relatively rare in healthy well-nourished individuals.

It can occur in patients with severely compromised intestinal function, those undergoing total parenteral nutrition, and also on advanced aged people (over 90).

Alternatively, people dependent on food grown from selenium-deficient soil are also at risk.

Evolution in biology

The selenocysteine-containing form occurred in green algae, diatoms, sea urchin, fish and chicken, too. One family of selenium-containing molecules as glutathione peroxidases repairs damaged cell membranes, while another (glutathione S-transferases) repairs damaged DNA and prevents mutations. *
