Some of the Most Requested Herbs
Echinacea |
Echinacea is well-accepted and respected as a primary immune stimulating and strengthening herb. It is known to enhance the production and release of the body's own white blood cells, the immune cells. This encourages a quick and effective response to both bacterial and viral infections. Echinacea can provide extra support at the first sign of colds, flus, sore throats, upper respiratory symptoms, sinusitis, and ear infections. Periodic use, especially during the winter months, may increase the overall strength of your child's natural defense system. |

Echinacea-Goldenseal Liquid Extract unites two of the most widely used North American botanicals, renowned for cold weather use. Echinacea has been shown in laboratory studies to support immune resistance by enhancing macrophage activity, while goldenseal is legendary as a traditional winter health botanical.
Echinacea Supports Immune Resistance. Research by scientists worldwide is validating echinacea’s many traditional uses. Echinacea’s benefits have been linked to three primary constituent groups: caffeic acid derivatives (including cichoric acid), polysaccharides, and lipophilic (fat-soluble) compounds.
Most research on echinacea has focused on its ability to support immune function, and specifically, to enhance the activity of macrophages - white blood cells that engulf and digest foreign particles in our bodies. Macrophage activity is an integral part of the immune response and of a person's innate general immune resistance
.Goldenseal: Traditional Winter Botanical. Goldenseal was used primarily by Native Americans along the East Coast of the United States. Beginning in the 1830's and continuing for decades, it was cited in such authoritative sources as the United States Dispensatory, the United States Pharmacopoeia and the National Formulary.
Goldenseal’s benefits are primarily associated with its high concentration of the alkaloid berberine.
Echinacea Rediscovered by Michael Tierra Prior to 1970, few people in America had heard of echinacea. Michael Tierra, then a fledgling herbalist, learned about it in an old text. He began using it in clinical practice - and the rest is history. Thirty years later, echinacea is one of America’s most relied-upon botanicals, and Michael Tierra is now one of the world’s most respected herbal practitioners.

On one hand, the nutritional value of the food we eat decreases as the nutritional content of the soil is depleted through time and modern farming methods.
On the other hand, the rapid increase in environmental pollution and toxic burden creates an increased need for these nutrients, the vitamins and minerals that protect, nourish and sustain a child's natural, healthy development...

Tinctures and Extracts
A tincture is an alcoholic extract (e.g. of leaves or other plant material) or solution of a non-volatile substance; (e.g. of iodine, mercurochrome). To qualify as a tincture, the alcoholic extract is to have an ethanol percentage of at least 40-60% (80-120 proof). Alcoholic tinctures are often made with various concentrations of ethanol, 25% being the most common. Herbal tinctures do not always use ethanol as a solvent, though this is the most frequent.
Other solvents include vinegar, glycerol, ether and propylene glycol, not all of these are used for internal consumption. Glycerine, is a poorer solvent generally, and vinegar, being acidic, is a better solvent of alkaloids but a poorer solvent of acids, which would result in the alkaloids being more present in the preparation than otherwise. However, for people who do not intake alcohol for any reason, glycerite tinctures are a better alternative.
Here are some Advantages of tinctures: Ethanol is able to dissolve substances which are less soluble in water, while at the same time the water content can dissolve the substances less soluble in ethanol. It is possible to vary the proportion of ethanol and water to produce tinctures with different qualities because of different substances.
Here is a general method of preparation on how tinctures can be prepared: Herbs are put in a jar and a spirit of 40°C pure ethanol is added. The jar is left to stand for 2-3 weeks, shaken occasionally. To make a more precise tincture, more extensive measuring can be done by combining 1 part herbs with a water-ethanol mixture of 2-10 parts, depending on the herb itself. With most tinctures 1 part water at 5 parts ethanol is used.
Since Mother cannot swallow pills she enjoys her many tinctures. Tinctures and extracts are more efficient to pack and keep track of when traveling to her gigs. Mother takes her herbs as tinctures and extracts because that is easier for her.
Sincerely, Mother
