Vitamin B-1, also known as Thiamine, is an essential nutrient first classified in 1936 by the chemist Robert Williams.

As a coenzyme, thiamine helps your body metabolize carbohydrates and lipids and in a noncoenzymatic capacity plays a role in nerve tissue.

Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) is a precursor to the active metabolite thiamine diphosphate, which is essential for the conversion of glucose into energy. Thiamine also helps in the conversion of carbohydrates into energy reserves.

Vitamin B-1 is essential for the metabolism of carbohydrates, some amino acids and alcohol.

It is necessary for the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and for the detoxification of both alcohol and lactic acid (a byproduct of strenuous exercise). Prolonged, severe vitamin B-1 deficiency can cause beriberi.

Vitamin B1...Thiamine

It is one of the B vitamins.

Its most common form is a colorless chemical compound with a chemical formula C12H17N4OS.

Thiamin decomposes if heated.

It is essential for neural function and carbohydrate metabolism.

Thiamin deficiency results in beriberi, a disease characterized by a bewildering variety of symptoms.

Common symptoms often involve the nervous system and the heart.

In less severe deficiency, nonspecific signs include malaise, weight loss, irritability and confusion.

During the refining process these segments of the grain are removed therefore decreasing the thiamin content in products such as white rice and white bread.

For example, 100 g of whole wheat flour contains 0.55 mg of thiamin while 100 g of white flour only contains 0.06 mg of thiamin.

Foods rich in thiamine.....Yeast, Oatmeal, Brown rice, Whole grain flour (rye or wheat), Asparagus, Kale, Cauliflower, Potatoes, Oranges, Pork, Liver (beef or pork), Eggs.

_______________________

There is only one book in English devoted entirely to the clinical use of vitamin B1.

It was written by Derrick Lonsdale.

According to the author, early signs of thiamin deficiency include anorexia, insomnia, sleep apnea, dementia, depression, impotence, and infertility.

Extensive published research reviewed in the book provides statistically significant data supporting this position.

An important property of thiamin that distinguishes it from the other three vitamins associated with vitamin deficiency (vitamin C, vitamin B3, and vitamin D) is that it is extracted from food in the digestive tract in a form that requires specialized proteins for absorption into the bloodstream.

Once in the bloodstream, this form of thiamin requires specialized proteins for distribution to cells throughout the body.

_______________________

Because thiamin requires specialized transport proteins, malfunctions of these proteins can cause localized deficiency even when the diet contains more than twice the recommended daily allowance.

A form of thiamine that does not require specialized transport proteins for absorption and distribution is produced commercially in Japan.

It is known as TTFD.

_______________________

It is thought that many people with diabetes have a deficiency of thiamine and that this may be linked to some of the complications that can occur.

High doses

The RDA in most countries is set at about 1.4 mg. However, tests on volunteers at daily doses of about 50 mg have claimed an increase in mental acuity.

Autism

A 2002 pilot study administered thiamin tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide (TTFD) rectally to ten autism spectrum children, and reported beneficial clinical effect in eight.

There have been no follow-up trials.

Type II Diabetes

Recent research conducted by Warwick Medical School (WMS), University of Warwick suggests that high doses of Vitamin B1 could slow down the onset of early diabetic nephropathies. *

Thiamine or Vitamin B1

Well-known syndromes caused by thiamine deficiency include Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome and beriberi, diseases also common with chronic alcoholism.

A lack of thiamine can be caused by malnutrition, alcoholism, a diet high in thiaminase-rich foods (raw freshwater fish, raw shellfish, ferns) and/or foods high in anti-thiamine factors (tea, coffee, betel nuts).

The Vitamin B Complex

....and as you will find in any nutritional healing book as well as Prescription for Nutritional Healing by Phyllis A Balch, the B Vitamins are necessary for the maintenance of certain physiological functions and systems including, the nerves, eyes, hair, skin, mouth, liver, proper brain function and healthy gastrointestinal muscle tone.

The entire complex of B vitamins is necessary for energy production.  They are called coenzymes because they help the chemical reactions of enzymes with many other substances.

B-complex vitamins are necessary for the relief of anxiety and depression.

Elderly people need an adequate intake of the B vitamins as well as other vitamins because as we age we do not properly absorb nutrients.

There have been cases of elderly people diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease whose symptoms were relieved with the proper intake of Vitamin B-12 plus the B-Complex to relieve their depletion of these vitamins.

The B vitamins work properly as a team but one can take more of some than others.
A deficiency in one B vitamin often indicates a deficiency in another.

Although the B vitamins work in concert with each other, they will be discussed individually.

Vitamin B1, or Thiamine, deficiency can lead to myriad problems including neuro-degeneration, wasting and death.

Sincerely, Mother
