Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)
Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) is involved in more bodily functions than almost any other single nutrient, affects physical and mental health, and is required by the nervous system, is necessary for: maintaining sodium and potassium balance; normal brain function; aiding in the absorption of Vitamin B12; immune system function; and antibody production.

B6 is converted in the body to the main coenzyme responsible for amino acid and protein metabolism.
The central nervous system also relies heavily on pyridoxine to assist in the production of seratonin, a critical neurotransmitter. |

Vitamin B-6 is required for the metabolism of lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins.
It facilitates the conversion of amino acids from one to another and is necessary for the normal synthesis of hemoglobin and the normal function and growth of red blood cells.
It is also needed for the synthesis of the neurotransmitters serotonin, gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) and dopamine and for the conversion of essential fatty acids into prostaglandins. |

Vitamin B6
Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble vitamin.
Pyridoxal phosphate (PLP) is the active form and is a cofactor in many reactions of amino acid metabolism, including transamination, deamination, and decarboxylation.
PLP also is necessary for the enzymatic reaction governing the release of glucose from glycogen.

At least one preliminary study has found that this vitamin may increase dream vividness or the ability to recall dreams.
It is thought that this effect may be due to the role this vitamin plays in the conversion of tryptophan to serotonin.
__________________________
The intake of vitamin B6, from either diet or supplements, could cut the risk of Parkinson’s disease by half according to a prospective study from the Netherlands.
"Stratified analyses showed that this association was restricted to smokers," wrote the authors.

Nutritional supplementation with high dose vitamin B6 and magnesium is claimed to alleviate the symptoms of autism and is one of the most popular complementary and alternative medicine choices for autism.
Three small randomized controlled trials have studied this therapy; the smallest one (with 8 individuals) found improved verbal IQ in the treatment group and the other two (with 10 and 15 individuals, respectively) found no significant difference.
The short-term side effects seem to be mild, but there may be significant long-term side effects of peripheral neuropathy.
Some studies suggest that the B6-magnesium combination can also help attention deficit disorder , citing improvements in hyperactivity, hyperemotivity/aggressiveness and improved school attention.
__________________________
Cooking, storage and processing losses of vitamin B6 vary and in some foods may bemore than 50%, depending on the form of vitamin present in the food.
Plant foods lose the least during processing as they contain mostly pyridoxine which is far more stable than the pyridoxal or pyridoxamine found in animal foods.
For example, milk can lose 30-70% of its vitamin B6 content when dried.
__________________________
(scientific descriptions of these processes).... so deprivation of vitamin B6 results in impaired glucose tolerance.
Toxicity
An overdose of pyridoxine can cause a temporary deadening of certain nerves such as the proprioceptory nerves; causing a feeling of disembodiment common with the loss of proprioception.
This condition is reversible when supplementation is stopped. *

Vitamin B6
Vitamin B6 is involved in more bodily functions than almost any other single nutrient, affects physical and mental health, and is required by the nervous system.
It is necessary for: the production of hydrochloric acid; the absorption of fat and protein; maintaining sodium and potassium balance; promoting red blood cell formation; normal brain function; the synthesis of the nucleic acids RNA and DNA; normal cellular growth; activating many enzymes; aiding in the absorption of Vitamin B12; immune system function; and antibody production. [1]
Vitamin B6 plays a role in cancer imunity and aids in the prevention of:arteriosclerosis, some kidney stones, the formation of a toxic chemical called homocysteine.
Pyridoxine acts as a mild diuretic, and is used to help in the treatment of certain conditions like asthma, arthritis, and allergies. [2]
Deficiencies: anemia, sore tongue, vomiting, acne, anorexia, arthritis, conjunctivitis, inflammation of the mouth and gums, convulsions, cracks or sores on the mouth and lips, depression, dizziness, fatigue, headaches, nausea, flaky skin, hyperirritability, impaired wound healing, learning difficulties, impaired memory, memory loss, hair loss, hearing problems, numbness, oily facial skin, stunted growth, tingling sensations, Carpal Tunnel.[3]
SOURCES: brewer's yeast, carrots, eggs, fish, chicken, meat, peas, spinach, sunflower seeds, walnuts, wheat germ, avocados, bananas, beans, blackstrap molasses, brown rice, broccoli, whole grains, cabbage, cantaloupe, corn, dulse, plantains, potatoes, rice. [4]
The Vitamin B Complex
....and as you will find in any nutritional healing book as well as Prescription for Nutritional Healing by Phyllis A Balch, the B Vitamins are necessary for the maintenance of certain physiological functions and systems including, the nerves, eyes, hair, skin, mouth, liver, proper brain function and healthy gastrointestinal muscle tone.
The entire complex of B vitamins is necessary for energy production. They are called coenzymes because they help the chemical reactions of enzymes with many other substances.
B-complex vitamins are necessary for the relief of anxiety and depression.
Elderly people need an adequate intake of the B vitamins as well as other vitamins because as we age we do not properly absorb nutrients.
There have been cases of elderly people diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease whose symptoms were relieved with the proper intake of Vitamin B-12 plus the B-Complex to relieve their depletion of these vitamins.
The B vitamins work properly as a team but one can take more of some than others.
A deficiency in one B vitamin often indicates a deficiency in another.
-
Although the B vitamins work in concert with each other, they will be discussed individually.

- Abnormally High Plasma Levels of
Vitamin B6 in Children With Autism
The aim of this study was to
investigate the biochemical basis for
vitamin B6 therapy by measuring the
level of total vitamin B6 in the plasma of
unsupplemented children with autism
compared to unsupplemented control
subjects. Children with autism (n= 35,
age 3-9 years) and unrelated typical
children (n=11, age 6-9 years) were
studied. A microbiologic assay was used
to measure the level of total vitamin B6
in a blinded fashion.
Children with autism had a 75%
higher level of total vitamin B6 than
the controls (medians of 56 versus 32
-
ng/mL). Most of the autistic children
-
(77%) had levels that were more than
2 standard deviations above the median
value of the controls. The autistic girls
(n=5) also had elevated levels (mean of
54.6 ng/mL, median of 60 ng/mL).
- Previous studies found that pyridoxal
kinase had a very low activity in
children with autism and pyridoxal 5
phosphate (PLP) levels are unusually low
in children with autism. Thus, it appears
that the low conversion of pyridoxine to
PLP results in low levels of PLP, which is
the active cofactor for 113 known enzymatic
reactions, including the formation
of many key neurotransmitters. Total
vitamin B6 is abnormally high in autism,
consistent with previous reports of an
impaired pyridoxal kinase for the conversion
of pyridoxine and pyridoxal to PLP.
This may explain the many published
studies of benefits of high-dose vitamin
B6 supplementation in some children and
adults with autism.
