Vitamin C
Vitamin C is necessary for hundreds of physiological reactions in the body; as well as aiding in: healthy gums; adrenal gland function, tissue growth and repair; the production of anti-stress hormones and interferon; the metabolism of folic acid, tyrosine, and phenylalanine.

The primary function of vitamin C is to assist in the production of collagen, although it is rapidly becoming identified as a key player in detoxifying the body from foreign substances.

Vitamin C in Plum
Two-time Nobel prize winner, Dr. Linus Pauling was the first to realize vitamin C's crucial importance in the maintenance of a healthy immune system. In 1970 he proposed that regular intake of vitamin C in amounts far higher than the officially sanctioned RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) could help prevent and shorten the duration of the common cold. Although the medical establishment immediately voiced their strong opposition to this idea, many ordinary people believed Dr. Pauling and began taking large amounts of vitamin C. Most immediately noticed a great decrease in the frequency and severity of their colds.

Vitamin C - Bioflavonoids are potent polyphenol antioxidants that protect the body from free radical damage. The citrus bioflavonoids and their metabolites (hesperitin, naringenin, and quercetin, among others) may contribute to cardiovascular health by minimizing antioxidant damage and promoting capillary integrity.

Goats, like almost all animals, make their own vitamin C. An adult goat, weighing approx. 70 kg, will manufacture more than 13,000 mg of vitamin C per day in normal health, and levels manyfold higher when faced with stress.

Vitamin C is perhaps the most popular vitamin among the common nutrients and biochemicals.
Because the vitamin is water-soluble, it must be regularly replenished.
Vitamin C (commonly referred to as ascorbic acid) is commonly found in fresh fruits, especially in the citrus family: oranges, lemons, limes, and tangerines.
It is also abundant in spinach, turnips, mustard greens, peppers, tomatoes, melons and broccoli.

Vitamin C
Read an article in Wikipedia with references and links Jan 28, 2009
Vitamin C or L-ascorbate is an essential nutrient for a large number of higher primate species (including humans), a small number of other mammalian species (notably guinea pigs and bats), a few species of birds, and some fish.
The presence of ascorbate is required for a range of essential metabolic reactions in all animals and plants.
It is made internally by almost all organisms, human being a notable exception.
It is widely known that a deficiency in this vitamin causes scurvy in humans.
The pharmacophore of vitamin C is the ascorbate ion. In living organisms, ascorbate is an anti-oxidant, since it protects the body against oxidative stress, and is a cofactor in several vital enzymatic reactions.
In humans, vitamin C is a highly effective antioxidant, acting to lessen oxidative stress; a substrate for ascorbate peroxidase; and an enzyme cofactor for the biosynthesis of many important biochemicals. Vitamin C acts as an electron donor for eight different enzymes:
-
Three participate in collagen hydroxylation. These reactions add hydroxyl groups to the amino acids proline or lysine in the collagen molecule (via prolyl hydroxylase and lysyl hydroxylase), thereby allowing the collagen molecule to assume its triple helix structure and making vitamin C essential to the development and maintenance of scar tissue, blood vessels, and cartilage.
-
Two are necessary for synthesis of carnitine. Carnitine is essential for the transport of fatty acids into mitochondria for ATP generation.
-
The remaining three have the following functions:
- dopamine beta hydroxylase participates in the biosynthesis of norepinephrine from dopamine.
- another enzyme adds amide groups to peptide hormones, greatly increasing their stability.
- one modulates tyrosine metabolism.
Biological tissues that accumulate over 100 times the level in blood plasma of vitamin C are the adrenal glands, pituitary, thymus, corpus luteum, and retina.
Those with 10 to 50 times the concentration present in blood plasma include the brain, spleen, lung, testicle, lymph nodes, liver, thyroid, small intestinal mucosa, leukocytes, pancreas, kidney and salivary glands.
Humans have no enzymatic capability to manufacture vitamin C.
The cause of this phenomenon is that the last enzyme in the synthesis process, L-gulonolactone oxidase, cannot be made by the listed animals because the gene for this enzyme, Pseudogene ΨGULO, is defective.
The mutation has not been lethal because vitamin C is abundant in their food sources.
Most simians consume the vitamin in amounts 10 to 20 times higher than that recommended by governments for humans.
Trauma or injury has also been demonstrated to use up large quantities of vitamin C in humans.

Vitamin C fights off the effects of having high cholesterol.
Cholesterol repairs micro-fractures of blood vessel walls, but the sticky nature of cholesterol when filling in these micro-fractures promotes the buildup of more cholesterol at these areas of blood vessel walls.
With the supplementation of Vitamin C in higher dosages the micro-fractures of blood vessels are repaired by the vitamin C and thus the buildup of cholesterol and subsequent blockages of blood vessels will not occur. (Dr. Craig Mencl researcher)

The richest natural sources are fruits and vegetables, and of those, the Kakadu plum and the camu camu fruit contain the highest concentration of the vitamin.
Vitamin C has limited popularity as a treatment for autism spectrum symptoms.
A 1993 study of 18 children with ASD found some symptoms reduced after treatment with vitamin C, but these results have not been replicated.

Vitamin C
Vitamin C helps with the formation of collagen; the protection of abnormal blood clotting and bruising; promoting the healing of burns and wounds.
As one of the antioxidants, Vitamin C works together with Vitamin E and beta-carotene to be even more effective than if taken separately.
Bioflavanoids are essential for the absorption of Vitamin C, and the two should be taken together.
So much has been researched and written on Vitamin C, Mother uggests that everyopne should be reading and finding out how good it is for them, especially the research of dr Linus Pauling(the only man to ever receive 2 Nobel Prizes).
Any good dentist will tell you that 1,000 mg of Vitamin C daily is required for healthy gums.
