The germ of a cereal is the reproductive part that germinates to grow into a plant; it is the embryo of the seed.
Along with bran, germ is often a by-product of the milling that produces refined grain products.
Cereal grains and their components, such as wheat germ, rice bran, and maize may be used as a source from which vegetable oil is extracted, or used directly as a food ingredient.
The germ is retained as an integral part of whole grain foods.

Wheat germ is a concentrated source of several essential nutrients including Vitamin E, folate (folic acid), phosphorus, thiamin, zinc and magnesium, as well as essential fatty acids and fatty alcohols.
It is a good source of fiber.
Wheat germ can be added to protein shakes, casseroles, muffins, pancakes, cereals, yogurt, cookies, and other baked goods.
Wheat germ can become rancid if not properly stored in a refrigerator or freezer, and away from sunlight.
The amount of nutrients that are contained within wheat germ seems endless.
It contains more potassium and iron than any other food source.
Another important vitamin found in wheat germ is vitamin E.
Vitamin E is a very important antioxidant.
It is helpful in preventing the body's aging process and also to prevent heart disease.
Vitamin E also helps to prevent blood clots and is needed to strengthen the body’s immune system.

Wheat germ has been found to be very beneficial in order to keep the body in tip top condition.
It is used by athletes in their diet to improve cardiovascular function and improve endurance levels.
Body builders will also add wheat germ to their diets in order to bulk up and maintain the nutritional levels they need to perform.
It is recommended that all women of childbearing age get sufficient amounts of Folic acid to prevent neural-tube birth defects.
Wheat germ also contains a phytonutrient called L-ergothioneine, which is a powerful antioxidant that is not destroyed by cooking.
The fiber boost you get from wheat germ is significant. |

In his New Herb Bible (Fireside, 1992), Earl Mindell advises people with dry skin to use soaps containing wheat germ oil to minimize the depletion of the natural, protective oils in the skin.
In The Natural Pharmacy (Prima Lifestyles, 1999), Schuyler Lininger Jr., D.C, et al., say that preliminary studies on the octacosanol present in wheat germ oil ''had promising effects on endurance, reaction time, and other measures of exercise capacity.'
' Wheat Germ Oil promotes renewal of normal new skin cells.
Used in cosmetics because of its large vitamin E content.
http://www.eaudrey.com/baby.htm ''Mother and Baby Care Wheat Germ and Honey Skin Cream.... Ingredients: 2 teaspoons dried mint, sage, and rosemary 1/2 ounce beeswax 2 ounces lanolin 1/2 cup wheat germ oil 1 teaspoon honey 1/2 cup boiling water Instructions Put dried herbs in a cup or mug. Pour boiling water over and stir. Steep for ten minutes. Strain out the herbs and leave remaining ''tea'' to cool. Melt beeswax and lanolin in heatproof glass in simmering water. Add the wheat germ oil. Continue stirring and add the herb tea very slowly. Remove from heat and add honey. Stir until creamy and transfer into containers. This cream lasts about 3 months-longer if refrigerated. It is good for both mother and baby's over a year old. (Just in case...because of the added honey.)
Belly Oil ....Ingredients: 1 tablespoon sweet almond oil 1 tablespoon wheat germ oil 2 tablespoons jojoba oil 3 drops lavender essential oil 3 drops tangerine essential oil 3 drops rose geranium essential oil 10 drops carrot seed oil Instructions Mix all ingredients together. Shake before each use. Massage into belly area or anywhere skin is itchy or marked. This blend of oils stops the itch from the stretching of skin-it may also minimize the appearance of stretch marks later.'

Wheat germ can become rancid if not properly stored in a refrigerator or freezer, and away from sunlight. Some manufacturers prevent rancidity by storing wheat germ in vacuum sealed glass containers; these prevent oxygen passing through unlike plastic containers, through which oxygen passes because diatomic oxygen is non-polar, as is plastic, thus the solubility rule like-dissolves-like applies.
It's worthwhile to note a confusing error: the USDA's Nutrient Data Laboratory (http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/), and many websites that derive their data from it, shows vitamin E as absent in crude wheat germ; this is an error. That same database notes 1 tsp. wheat germ oil (extracted from crude wheat germ) as having 6.72 mg of vitamin E, and 1 tbsp. cooked wheat germ has 1.14 mg of vitamin E.

Other uses
In molecular biology, wheat germ extract is used to carry out in vitro translation experiments, as the plant embryo contains all the macromolecular components necessary for translating mRNA into amino acids, but contains relatively low levels of its own mRNA.
Wheat germ is also useful in biochemistry as it contains lectins which bind strongly to certain glycoproteins, hence it can be used to isolate such proteins.

Wheat Germ Oil
Wheat germ oil is extracted from the germ of the wheat kernel, which makes up only 2½% by weight of the kernel. Wheat germ oil is particularly high in octacosanol - a 28 carbon long-chain saturated primary alcohol found in a number of different vegetable waxes. Octacosanol has been studied as an exercise and physical performance enhancing agent. Very long chain fatty alcohols obtained from plant waxes and beeswax have been reported to lower plasma cholesterol in humans. Wheat germ oil is also very high in Vitamin E and has the highest content of Vitamin E of any food that has not undergone prior preparation or vitamin fortification. As a cooking oil, wheat germ oil is strongly flavored, expensive and easily perishable. Wheat germ oil contains the following fatty acids:
| Component |
g/100g |
| Linoleic acid (omega-6) |
55 |
| Palmitic acid |
16 |
| Oleic acid |
14 |
| Linolenic acid (omega-3) |
7 |
Other uses of wheat germ oil have also been explored, including increasing blood flow and reaction time, as well as for treating certain skin conditions.

Wheat Germ
Wheat germ contains around 28 percent protein and has more protein than can be found in most meat products.
The human body needs protein in order to repair tissue damage and to help minerals and nutrients reach our cells.
Also found in great quantities are riboflavin, calcium, zinc, magnesium and vitamins A, B1 and B3.
Vitamins B1 and 3 are very important to maintain energy levels and maintain healthy muscles, organs, hair and skin.
Folic acid reduces a compound in your body called homocysteine.
Lower levels of homocysteine have been linked to reducing the risk of heart disease, osteoporosis bone fractures, and dementia.
Wheat germ is very high in protein.
