Based on its soothing, cooling properties, many refer to Aloe Vera simply as the "medicine plant".

Externally, it's been used throughout history to help ease the discomfort of sunburns, minor wounds, cuts, scrapes and rashes.

Many researchers believe that aloe can enhance the body's ability to heal by stimulating the activity of collagen and elastin – two compounds responsible for healthy tissue integrity.

In India, the Aloe Vera plant is named after the Virgin Goddess Kumari, and is renowned for its long standing ability to maintain the essential nature, youthful integrity and sensory strength of a woman as she passes through the 3 stages of her lunar existence: puberty, childbearing age, and menopause.

Kumari Asava contains high quality phyto-estrogens and phyto-progesterones in a balanced formula without the risks inherent to synthetic hormonal therapies.

By its regular use, the body, mind and senses become youthful and evergreen.

Aloe Vera Leaf - Powder can be consumed by sprinkling it over your food or mixing it with a syrup such as maple or chocolate. You could also mix it with orange juice. The citric acid in the orange juice will help to mask any unpleasant powder tastes.

Other common names: Aloe, Barbados Aloe, Curacao Aloe Cleopatra used Aloe Vera as a beauty treatment, and today this remarkable emollient is still used to smooth wrinkles, heal skin irritations, soothe burns (including sunburn) and draw out infection from wounds.

Aloe Vera has attracted the interest of modern physicians for its ability to heal radiation burns.

Taken internally, Aloe Vera is a powerful laxative, anti-inflammatory and promotes healing.

Aloe Vera is a natural source of beta-carotene, minerals, amino acids and the important antioxidant vitamins (A, C, E and B1, B2 and B3).

History: For more than 3,500 years, healers and physicians have sung the praises of this fragrant desert lily.

Pictures of this juicy, succulent plant have been found on the walls of the temples of Egypt, where it was believed to have been used in the embalming process.

Alexander the Great was reputed to have conquered the island of Socotra in the fourth century B.C., in order to acquire the beautiful violet dye produced by the species of Aloe (socotrine) grown there.

The Greek physician Dioscorides wrote of its benefits to heal wounds and treat hemorrhoids, and the Romans also used the plant to help heal wounds.

Aloe originated in southern Africa, and many varieties of this perennial are now cultivated throughout Africa, the Mediterranean and Caribbean regions, and in many countries of South and Central America and Asia.

Although there are nearly five hundred varieties of this perennial plant, only Aloe Vera is considered to be the ''true'' curative healer.

Some of Aloe Vera's constituents include beta-carotene, beta-sitosterol, lignins, saponins, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, amino acids and the important antioxidant vitamins (A, C, E and B1, B2 and B3).

Beneficial Uses: Aloe Vera is a powerful laxative and known to be one of the finest body cleansers, removing morbid matter from the stomach, liver, kidneys, spleen and bladder and is considered to be the finest colon cleanser known.

It will not promote ''gripe'' (sharp pains and grumbling in the bowels) when used as a laxative, and it is also less likely to cause dehydration from such use.

Aloe is potentially helpful in the treatment of Type-2 diabetes and does not cause weight gain.

Some varieties of Aloe vera aloe vera plant have no spots.

The gel of the succulent aloe plant has been used as a balm for minor burns since the time of the ancient Egyptians.

Aloe is also taken internally to treat constipation, colitis, peptic ulcers, and diabetes.

European folk medicine calls for using aloe vera juice to relieve heartburn and ulcers.

While there is very little substantive evidence to support these internal uses, preliminary research has shown promising results. In one Japanese study, 17 of 18 patients who took aloe vera juice found some relief for their peptic ulcers. However, none of the participants was given a placebo, so comparisons of its effectiveness could not be made.

Other clinical trials in Japan indicate that certain compounds in aloe vera reduce the secretion of stomach juices and the formation of lesions.

Other studies suggest that the ingestion of Aloe Vera gel may have a beneficial effect to the accumulation of blood fat lipids associated with the disease.

Test groups given Aloe Vera showed a decrease in total cholesterol, triglyceride, phospholipid and nonesterified fatty acid levels, each of which, when elevated, seem to accelerate the accumulation of fatty material in large and medium sized arteries, including the coronary arteries of the heart.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera, also known as the medicinal aloe, is a species of succulent plant that probably originated in the southern half of the Arabian peninsula, Northern Africa, the Canary islands and Cape Verde.

Aloe vera grows in arid climates and is widely distributed in Africa, India and other arid areas.

The species is frequently cited as being used in herbal medicine.

There is some preliminary evidence that Aloe vera extracts may be useful in the treatment of wound and burn healing, diabetes and elevated blood lipids in humans.

These positive effects are thought to be due to the presence of compounds such as polysaccharides, mannans, anthraquinones and lectins

Medicinal uses

Aloe vera juice is used for consumption and relief of digestive issues such as heartburn and irritable bowel syndrome.

In addition to topical use in wound or burn healing, internal intake of Aloe vera has been linked with improved blood glucose levels in diabetics, and with lower blood lipids in hyperlipidaemic patients, but also with acute hepatitis (liver disease).

In other diseases, preliminary studies have suggested oral Aloe vera gel may reduce symptoms and inflammation in patients with ulcerative colitis.

Topical application of Aloe vera may be effective for genital herpes and psoriasis.

Aloe vera extracts have antibacterial and antifungal activities.

Aloe vera extracts have been shown to inhibit the growth of fungi that cause tinea; however, evidence for control beneath human skin remains to be established.

For its anti-fungal properties, Aloe vera is used as a fish tank water conditioner.

For bacteria, inner-leaf gel from Aloe vera was shown to inhibit growth of Streptococcus and Shigella species in vitro. In contrast, Aloe vera extracts failed to show antibiotic properties against Xanthomonas species. *
