germanium in ginseng

Germanium

Germanium seems to be effective in enhancing the body's natural resistance to viruses. This led to it being used as a treatment for AIDS in the late 1980s, prior to some toxicity problems with one of the synthetic forms.

Germanium is not even classed as a "trace mineral".

Yet it is important why natural foods, such as garlic are recommended by nutritional practitioners in the diet.

In plants, germanium's effectiveness in it's ability to regulate the uptake of oxygen in the cells, helps protect them from infections by viruses, bacteria and fungi as well as increasing growth and protecting them from the cold.

In humans, it seems the effects are both related to oxygen regulation and its strong antioxidant activity.

Many clinical trials evaluating spirogermanium for various cancers were conducted in the early 1980s. A significant incidence of renal, hepatic, and neurological toxicity was documented.

There are concerns of contamination of germanium products by the toxic inorganic germanium dioxide. The FDA has issued warning letters to marketers of germanium about unsubstantiated anticancer claims. Importation of germanium for human consumption is not allowed (19) (20) (21). **

Germanium

Germanium seems to be effective in enhancing the body's natural resistance to viruses.

This led to it being used as a treatment for AIDS in the late 1980s, prior to some toxicity problems with one of the synthetic forms.

Dietary Sources: garlic, ginseng, comfrey and mushrooms.

It seems that the reason for germanium's effectiveness is its ability to regulate the uptake of oxygen in the cells.

Germanium dioxide has been associated with permanent kidney damage.

Seeing as how the only necessary amount daily so far has been said to be 1 mg, we can probably get this amount of germanium from our diet if we eat mushrooms and garlic.

Germanium has been called Vitamin "O"

germanium side effects

Germanium is UNSAFE. There have been more than 30 reports of kidney failure and death linked with use of germanium. It builds up in the body and can damage vital organs such as the kidneys. It can also cause anemia, muscle weakness, nerve problems, and other side effects.

Overview

Germanium is a chemical element. People use it as medicine.

Despite serious safety concerns, germanium is used for heart and blood vessel conditions, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease; for eye conditions, including glaucoma and cataracts; and for liver conditions, including hepatitis and cirrhosis.

Some people use germanium for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), pain, weak bones (osteoporosis), low energy, and AIDS.

Other uses include heavy metal poisoning, including mercury and cadmium poisoning; depression; cancer; food allergies; and yeast and viral infections.

Germanium is also used for increasing circulation of blood to the brain, supporting the immune system, and as an antioxidant.

How does it work?

Germanium might act against inflammation. It might also have antioxidant properties and affect the immune system. *

Germanium

Dietary supplements, pharmaceutical development, and health hazard

Germanium is not thought to be essential to the health of plants or animals. Germanium in the environment has little or no health impact because it usually occurs only as a trace element in ores and carbonaceous materials, and is used in very small quantities that are not likely to be ingested, in its various industrial and electronic applications. For similar reasons, germanium in end-uses has little impact on the environment as a biohazard. Some reactive intermediate compounds of germanium are poisonous (see precautions, below).

As early as 1922, doctors in the United States used the inorganic form of germanium (usually the sesquioxide) to treat patients with anemia. It was used in other forms of treatments, such as a purported immune system booster, but its efficiency has been dubious. Its role in cancer treatments has been debated, with the American Cancer Society contending that no anticancer effects have been demonstrated. U.S. Food and Drug Administration research has concluded that germanium, when used as a nutritional supplement, "presents potential human health hazard".

Certain germanium compounds are available in low dose in the U.S. as nonprescription dietary "supplements" in oral capsules or tablets. Other germanium compounds have been administered by alternative medical practitioners as non-FDA-allowed injectable solutions. Soluble inorganic forms of germanium used at first, notably the citrate-lactate salt, led to a number of cases of renal dysfunction, hepatic steatosis and peripheral neuropathy in individuals using them on a chronic basis. Plasma and urine germanium concentrations in these individuals, several of whom died, were several orders of magnitude greater than endogenous levels. A more recent organic form, beta-carboxyethylgermanium sesquioxide (propagermanium), has not exhibited the same spectrum of toxic effects.

Certain compounds of germanium have low toxicity to mammals, but have toxic effects against certain bacteria. However, no germanium compound has yet demonstrated a pharmaceutical use, as either an antibacterial or cancer chemotherapeutic agent. *
