Multi Vitamins
Mother prefers to have the new herbs that are considered healthy for you to take included in the “multi vitamins” that she takes daily and has for over 35 years. Among Mother's favorites are Dr Weil Vitamins and she finds this because she is happy with the form of the vitamins and minerals they use. Also, Irwin Naturals, Solgar vitamins, and New Chapter as well as any other whole food vitamins can be among the very best.

Multi Vitamins
From an article in Wikipedia:
A multi vitamin/mineral supplement is defined in the United States as a supplement containing 3 or more vitamins and minerals that does not include herbs, hormones, or drugs, where each vitamin and mineral is included at a dose below the tolerable upper level, as determined by the Food and Drug Board, and does not present a risk of adverse health effects. * |
A multi vitamin is a preparation intended to supplement a human diet with vitamins, dietary minerals and other nutritional elements.
Such preparations are available in the form of tablets, capsules, pastilles, powders, liquid multi vitamins and injectable formulations.
Other than injectable formulations, which are only available and administered under medical supervision, multi vitamins are recognized by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (the United Nations' authority on food standards) as a category of food.
Multi vitamin supplements are commonly provided in combination with minerals.

The terms multi vitamins and multi minerals are often used interchangeably.
There is no scientific definition for either.
Linguistically, the terms are compounded words of which meaning can be derived in that capacity. * |
History
Multi vitamins and multi minerals providing more than vitamins A and D became available in pharmacies and grocery stores in the mid-1930s.
In 1934 Nutrilite Company introduced the first multi vitamin multi mineral tablets.
These supplements were made from natural dried and compressed vegetable and fruit concentrates. In the early 1940s other brands started to produce synthetic tablets. * |

Uses
By supplementing the diet with additional vitamins and minerals, multi vitamins can be a valuable tool for those with dietary imbalances or different nutritional needs.
People with dietary imbalances may include those on restrictive diets and those who can't or won't eat a nutritious diet.
Pregnant women and elderly adults have different nutritional needs than other adults, and a multi vitamin may be indicated by their physicians. * |
The proponents of orthomolecular medicine recommend individually optimized vitamin intakes, usually at higher doses than standard recommendations (such as the US RDA).
They also recommend more absorbable forms of vitamins and minerals, in inexpensive but higher potency formulas, spread across the day. * |

Regulations by governmental agencies
United States
Because of their categorization as a dietary supplement by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), most multi vitamins sold in the U.S. are not required to undergo the rigorous testing procedures typical of pharmaceutical drugs. * |
However, some multi vitamins contain very high doses of one or several vitamins or minerals, or are specifically intended to treat, cure, or prevent disease, and therefore require a prescription or medicinal license in the U.S. Since such drugs contain no new substances, they do not require the same testing as would be required by a New Drug Application, but were allowed on the market as drugs due to the Drug Efficacy Study Implementation program. * |

Dietary supplements, often containing vitamins, are used to ensure that adequate amounts of nutrients are obtained on a daily basis, if optimal amounts of the nutrients cannot be obtained through a varied diet.
Scientific evidence supporting the benefits of some vitamin supplements is well established for certain health conditions, but others need further study.
In some cases, vitamin supplements may have unwanted effects, especially if taken before surgery, with other dietary supplements or medicines, or if the person taking them has certain health conditions.
Dietary supplements may also contain levels of vitamins many times higher, and in different forms, than one may ingest through food. * |
In nutrition and diseases
Vitamins are essential for the normal growth and development of a multicellular organism.
Using the genetic blueprint inherited from its parents, a fetus begins to develop, at the moment of conception, from the nutrients it absorbs.
It requires certain vitamins and minerals to be present at certain times.
These nutrients facilitate the chemical reactions that produce among other things, skin, bone, and muscle.
If there is serious deficiency in one or more of these nutrients, a child may develop a deficiency disease.
Even minor deficiencies may cause permanent damage. * |
For the most part, vitamins are obtained with food, but a few are obtained by other means.
For example, microorganisms in the intestine—commonly known as "gut flora"—produce vitamin K and biotin, while one form of vitamin D is synthesized in the skin with the help of the natural ultraviolet wavelength of sunlight.
Humans can produce some vitamins from precursors they consume.
Examples include vitamin A, produced from beta carotene, and niacin, from the amino acid tryptophan. * |
Once growth and development are completed, vitamins remain essential nutrients for the healthy maintenance of the cells, tissues, and organs that make up a multicellular organism; they also enable a multicellular life form to efficiently use chemical energy provided by food it eats, and to help process the proteins, carbohydrates, and fats required for respiration. * |

Deficiencies
Humans must consume vitamins periodically but with differing schedules, to avoid deficiency.
Human bodily stores for different vitamins vary widely; vitamins A, D, and B12 are stored in significant amounts in the human body, mainly in the liver, and an adult human's diet may be deficient in vitamins A for many months and B12 in some cases for years, before developing a deficiency condition.
However, vitamin B3(niacin and niacinamide) is not stored in the human body in significant amounts, so stores may only last a couple of weeks..
For vitamin C, the first symptoms of scurvy in experimental studies of complete vitamin C deprivation in humans have varied widely, from a month to more than six months, depending on previous dietary history which determined body stores.
No vitamin must be consumed every day, however, or even every week. * |

About Multi Vitamins
Vitamin supplements never have too much of any ingredient because it is against the law and scary to have too much of a vitamin, like having vitamin d toxicity.
Hypervitaminosis D is a condition that occurs after taking excessive doses of vitamin D. Symptoms: Constipation; Decreased appetite (anorexia); Dehydration; Fatigue; Irritability; Muscle weakness; Vomiting. Therefore there are many of these known toxicities and we also know how to spot them.

You can safely go to any vitamin shop or health food store and buy what is on their shelves and take it if you need it. You do have to follow the directions on the label to be safe. Multi vitamins have vitamins A, B complex(which is a complete vitamin B with B1(thiamin), B2(riboflavin), B3(Niacin), B5(pantothenic acid), B6(pyridoxine), B7(biotin), B9(folate, or folic acid), B12(cyanocobalamin)), vitamin C, Vitamin D1, D2, and D3, vitamin E(tocotriennols), and Vitamin K(phylloquinone).

Mother is a follower of the Dr Linus Pauling Institute, and their scientific way of thinking, and takes mega doses of vitamin C for her health. But you really have to know what you are doing to go into taking mega doses of anything, and because she is a scientist she knows how to watch for anything that it could cause that would possible be bad for her. Dr Linus Pauling was taking 18,000 mg of vitamin C when he died. He said that he was using it to stave off his Prostate Cancer, which at the time did not have many options to medically overcome it like they do now. Mother does not take anywhere near that amount but the USDA is only 60 mg and any good dentist will tell you that you need an intake of at least 1,000 mg, or 1 gram, of vitamin C daily just to keep your gums healthy.

So the multi vitamins Mother likes also have ingredients like, coq10, grape seed extract, borage oil, acai berry, lutein, and fish oil, which is mostly krill oil these days which is much better for you, and many others. But mother will also just take her multi vitamins and then get a supplement of krill oil, borage oil, glucosamine sulfate, and coq10, and others minerals and herbs she has been in need of and she always discusses these things with her doctor.

Mother is very keen on Spirutein Protein Shakes because the spirulina in them is so very, very good for your health. If it were not for the Spirutein shakes they make mother would have died when she was ill. Mother had to have radiation and they screwed up and gave her 3rd degree burns in her mouth. She was on a liquid diet of Spirutein Shakes and custard which were the only things she could taste that did not taste like poison when she did not have any taste buds from the radiation, for over 3 months. She lost 55 pounds.

She says it was a good thing she was overweight before she was ill because she went down to 105 pounds, which is not good at 5’8”. All over her mouth under her tongue, on top of her tongue on all sides of the inside of her mouth there were blisters so bad that she could not even touch her tongue to a tooth without severe pain. (her friends called her “Rooby Roo”, for the Scooby Doo character on the cartoons and how he talked is how she had to talk when she could not touch her tongue on anywhere in her mouth ha ha). (You can read all about that on her “About Mother” page). It was all in fun.

Mother does not say what she thinks the best prenatal vitamins, best vitamins, or best body building supplements are. Pregnancy vitamins are also something you should discuss with your own doctor. He is the one who knows your specific needs. Yes, if you are pregnant, you do need to take pregnancy vitamins. The reason is because vitamins are very personal items, and as long as you take a quality product, and one that is what you need, you will be fine. As for body building supplements, it depends on what you are trying to achieve as to what you need to take for this also. You can discuss this with your trainer as to your own individual needs.
_____________________
As far as amino acid supplements go, every person needs to discuss taking amino acids with a qualified health care provider before doing this because there are only some people who need them. People who have specific problems with certain things could need them and when they ask their doctor, he will tell you if you do.
_____________________
Well let’s see what else I have to say about Multi vitamins. Mother truly believes in eating healthy food. Raw food and vegetables without pesticides are a food start. If you eat meat, then you need to find meat that is natural and does not have all those antibiotics, hormones, and even more chemicals in them. You need to eat good healthy fats like avocados most of the time, instead of animal fats. Sea salt is a great salt to switch to for those of you who can have salt, but make certain it contains iodide.
_____________________
In short, you need to look for natural supplements and take your daily vitamins and drink coconut water when you can, which is very hydrating with all those electrolytes in it. Natural vitamins are good for you and if you can, get them gluten free. There are many other things beside celiac disease that can cause sensitivities to gluten. You should definitely give your kids vitamins. And for those of you who cannot swallow pills, like mother, you can probably even find liquid vitamin supplements at Costco sometimes, to save yourself some money (or you can buy your vitamins and supplements here through ShopMotherEarth.com to really save yourself some money.
Sincerely, Mother
